Outline for Lesson Plan:

Do you know anyone that is trans?

● Who are they to you? How did they tell you or did you find out? Are they comfortable
around others and with themselves now?
Slide 1
● Introduction into the transsexual/transgender google presentation.
Slide 2
● Gender is a spectrum. People are used to “female” and “male”, however, those two
gender are not the only two genders in existence. There is a wide range of genders to
discover one’s self in. Use Agender as an example, and genderfluid.
● Gender is determined mentally, not with what’s physically there. Gender is decided by
how the person feels is correct. That is where the range of gender comes from.
● It’s personal identity. It takes a while for someone to fully understand themselves as a
person. Identity is determined by yourself, you know yourself better than anyone else.
Slide 3
● Explain the slight difference between someone transgender and someone that is
transsexual. Though slightly different, for the most part, they are very similar.
Slide 4
● Transgender is not determined by genitals. As previously stated, gender is all in the state
of mind.
● To be transgender does not determine the person to be mentally ill. The person has
simply realized that they have the incorrect gender and is trying to do something about it.
They are trying to be themselves.
● Being transgender is not a choice. There was simply a mishap in the process of
developing, and now they are correcting it themselves to whatever they feel comfortable.
Slide 5
● Explain how the pictures represent the thought process and realization that a transgender
person has.
● The first one indicates that genitalia does not determine your gender, you do. The middle
photo demonstrates that if you use the pronoun, simply apologize. The third photo shows
how the person that they see in the mirror is the one they see themselves as, it does not
match their physical appearance.
Slide 6
● Compare the amount of gender reassignment surgeries between 2015 and 2016. Go
through the statistics on a transgender person’s mentality and lifestyle.
Slide 7

● Quickly and briefly go through the murder of Ally Lee Steinfeld before allowing the
video to go deeper into depth.
Slide 8
● Ask the class after the video if they believe justice was served to Ally Lee. Ask the class
what makes Ally Lee any different of a victim than any other victim.
Slide 9
● Asking for which pronouns they’d prefer to be called will allow the person to feel more
comfortable around others. Make sure to remember which pronounce they prefer,
● Understanding what is offensive will strengthen the friendship that is developing. Be sure
to be cautious with your words.
● Never assume that the person beside you is cisgender.
● Understand that they could have gotten through, or is currently going through, a lot.
Whether it be with personal problems, or they are having complications with their body.
Slide 10
● Hand out the mini trans flag and ask the students to write their response to the two
questions on the flag. Example is shown in the slide.

Closure: If someone transgender was to be in your class, if you do not have someone already,
think about how you would act in these situations in the classroom.
Do you believe that openness and acknowledgment towards a transgender person should be
expressed in the classroom? Is there anything that can negatively impact the student if the class
knew they are transgender? Ask for anyone to share their sentence.
