Alien and capitalism

Story Narrative
Weyland-Yutani Corporation

‘’The specimen has the potential to make the

company a ton of money that takes priority over
any jobs and in this case lives. These were the
main ways capitalism was portrayed in Alien
and how it helped progress the events of the
film.’’ Lucas Lowman 2014
Fig 0 Special Order 937 (2018)

The corporation valuated the alien more, than the life's of its own people. As all other priorities were
Secondary.
Ash The Robot

‘’Ash who overrides the quarantine protocol by allowing

on board the alien, studies without emotion this “perfect
organism,” and is revealed midway through the film to
be an android. The ship’s computer, which is nicknamed
“mother” and is modeled after HAL in 2001: A Space
Odyssey (1968), is also a villain in its blindly carrying out
the wishes of its programmer’’ Robert Alpert 2018

Fig 1 Ash(2018)

Ash could be consider a reflection of capitalism, since he follows orders without question. Is more
Interested in keeping the alien alive than saving the crew from it.
USCSS Nostromo

‘’The presence of the alien on board the Nostromo exposes

the fictive nature of this contract, disclosing the 'profound
reality' of capitalist amorality. The Company – the world-
monopoly that owns the ship – is more responsible for the
death of the crew than the alien itself, making the alien a
kind of proxy for the capitalists’’punk Patriot 2014

Fig 2 Nostromo (2016)

In a way the alien can be consider a proxy for capitalism, as like ash it does
not show any morality towards the crew. The contract it self is more deathly than the alien,
Because if the contract did not exist the crew would have lived.
Conclusion

When looking at story narrative, Capitalism is reflected negative way in the Weyland-Yutani Corporation.
By creating Special Order 937 that values more the alien than its own people. And ash trying to
prevent the crew from killing the alien.
