DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES

PUPE 09-10 FALL TERM / LEVEL C

WORKSHEET NO: 3 Oct. 23, 2009

PART A- Cloze Test: Read the text below and think of the word which best fits each space. Use
only ONE word in each space.

Ten years ago, Paul Freeman was so poor that he couldn’t (1) AFFORD to go on holiday unless he
stayed with relatives. He lived in a tiny house with three friends and (2) COULD only buy clothes if
they were very cheap. (3) HOWEVER, he had (4) ALWAYS wanted to set up his own business and,
eventually, he (5) DECIDED to go for it. It wasn’t easy, and he couldn’t risk (6) BUYING anything
expensive in case he needed the money for the business. Today, however, he is wealthier (7) THAN
he ever imagined he would be.
Paul’s story contains a (8) FEW useful lessons. If you want to be rich, it doesn’t (9)MATTER
what you produce, as (10) LONG as there is a market for it. You might have difficulties in the
beginning, but you should never (11) GIVE up. If you’re finding it hard (12) TO get by, (13) TRY to be
patient. Then, if you are careful with money, you should soon start to (14) BE successful.
Even now, Paul (15) NEVER//RARELY//SELDOM goes on holiday. So, why (16) DOESN’T this
successful entrepreneur take holidays? Perhaps it is because he (16) HAS invested some of his
money in houses. Ask yourself this: if you – like Paul- had luxurious homes in Jamaica, Florida,
Switzerland and France, how many holidays (17) WOULD you need?

PART B: Fill in the blanks with the correct past tense form of the verbs in the box.

end up manage go(x2) fall off cycle spend forget

to France before, but we (4) KNEW some French from our time at school and we (5) HAD MANAGED
to brush up on the basics, but we (6) WERE WONDERING if we (7) HAD MADE the right decision.
We (8) HAD PLANNED our route carefully in advance, but we (9) HAD FORGOTTEN one important
thing, the weather. It (10) HAD RAINED// HAD BEEN RAINING solidly since our arrival and that night we
(11) ENDED UP sleeping in the waiting room at a railway station. Then the next morning as we (12)
WERE RIDING down a steep hill, my bike (13)SKIDDED on the wet road and I (14) FELL OFF . I (15)
REALISED immediately that I (16) HAD BROKEN my arm, and after a visit to the local hospital I (17)
CAUGHT the next train to Calais for the ferry home. Unfortunately my parents (18) WERE NOT

(4) CREATIVE group of school kids came up with was to establish CREATE
a new (5) UNWRITTEN code to follow. Though it was not stated on paper, WRITE
it has worked for kids. It has been a fantastic cultural and (6) SOCIAL SOCIALIZE
revolution for the area’s teenagers.

The regulations don’t tell anyone what to do, but they do provide some useful
and practical guidance in terms of the kind of (7) BEHAVIOUR that teenagers BEHAVE
