What was the relationship between government support and private enterprise in
economic development?
The relationship between government support and private enterprise helped the
economic development in a very good way. One major thing that they did that helped the
economy develop was improving transport. “Around 1820, they began constructing a
massive system of canals and roads linking states along the Atlantic coast with new
states in the trans-Appalachian west.” (pg.243) With this being the new way of transport,
people started to build canals. The Erie canal brought prosperity to the farmers and
western New York and it also helped manufactures with long distance trade.

2. How were industrial development in the North and the expansion of cotton agriculture in
the South connected?
They were connected because both the South and the North drove economic
transformation. In the North merchants and manufacturers invested in new textile mills.
These new mills created a vast demand for cotton which transformed the southern
economy.

3. How did technological innovation improve the lives of ordinary people, and what
challenges did it present to them?
It improved the lives of ordinary people by giving them more jobs. The technological
innovation multiplied the population of places. For example, New York, New York
became one of the most popular cities due to the city having the best gateway to the
midwest. This made foreign trade easy which gave merchants jobs.

4. How was the structure of American society different in 1848 than it had been in 1800?
In the 1800’s families had higher status than the “low orders”. In 1848, America's largest
cities were divided between the gentle dwelling of the middle and upper classes. The
1800 society was mainly based on hierarchy and the 1848 society was divided into two
social classes.

1. How did the economic revolution described in this chapter affect the lives of women in
various social groups, and how did it make their experiences different from those of their
mothers….?
Women’s live were highly affected during this time. They had little to no power in the political
side. They had no social or economic rights and their social status changed substantially. As for
their jobs, they were given the lowest paying jobs, because they weren’t even meant to work.
Women only had one job and that was to take care of children and be by their husbands side.

economic changes discussed in this chapter?
Economic transformation of the first half of the nineteenth century relied on few city residents
who worked as merchants, manufactures, bankers and landlords in the urban areas. In the
South, economy increased due to new trading goods. Like water stream and minerals such as
coal and iron were most essentials.
