Presentation Lesson Plan

1. Show a video of an example of young advocacy. We showed the class a video of Naomi
Wadler to get them interested in our presentation.
2. Share a brief introduction about what you are going to be talking about during the
presentation. We told the class that we would be explaining ways on how you can instill
this passion into your students.
3. Began our 4 step lesson plan by using college tuition example
a. Introduce the topic: We showed a cartoon and article that demonstrated how
college tuition was rising rapidly.
b. Connect the issue with your students: We demonstrated how this directly
affected them by doing an interactive activity. For our interactive activity, we
calculated our own student loan amount.
c. Inform your students: We gave them hard facts and statistics on how the rising
college tuition affects them. We looked at a comic that directly
d. Incite action: We had each group in the class come up with one word about how
they felt after learning all the information. From there, we asked the students how
they can address or fix this issue. They wrote their responses on the whiteboard
so the rest of the class could see what they came up with.
4. Introduce what advocacy is.
a. Ask the class what they think the definition is
b. State the definition of advocacy if the students do not know
5. Tell class how they can engage in advocacy through their classrooms
6. List benefits of implementing advocacy within the classroom
a. Engagement- getting students to participate more in the classroom
b. Political literacy- being informed about controversial issues and current events
c. Tolerance- respecting their peers and understanding their peers’ views
d. Confidence- being confident in their own passions and values
e. Civil discourse- learning to engage in conversation to enhance understanding
f. Political participation- voting more later in life
7. State evidence of the benefits of having advocacy in the classroom.
8. Teach the class the five tips on how you can teach your students advocacy.

9. Go over the 4 step lesson plan again. Give details on how we did each step earlier in the
presentation.

10. Have the students create their own lesson plan using the four steps.
a. Think of 3 issues that your students in the classroom might face or care about.
b. Choose one issue and create a lesson plan on how you can talk about it within
the class.
c. Follow the four steps and write what you would do.
11. Discussion
a. Go through discussion questions about their lesson plans
i. Ask if they had any trouble coming up with parts of the lesson
ii. Talk through difficult topics to bring up in the classroom
12. Conclusion video
a. We watched “How to Change the World” by Kid President to encourage our
classmates to go out and make a difference in their classrooms.
