The carpenter bee


The carpenter bee has a scientific name that is ​xylocopa darwini.

CHARACTERISTICS AND REPRODUCTION

● The carpenter bee size is 2-3 cm.


● The males are golden brown lack
stings females are black and larger
than males.
● When is tropical climates, the females
put the eggs all year only with
interruption of cold weather.
● The female made a cave of wood, and
deposit the eggs.
● They can put thousands of egg.
● The eggs delay 2-3 days for born, the
beatles parasites the nest of bees.
When they are babies the mother only
feed the females.
● The bees delay 3-4 weeks to began
adults.
● They can fly for 2-3 weeks without rest.

Location and important role in the Archipelago:


The carpenter bees are distributive in the entire island, but you can especially found them in
Santa Cruz Island, Baltra, Española, Daphne, Floreana, Isabela, San Cristóbal, Santa Fe,
Santiago. This specially only reproduce in 9 of the 12 Island.They specially live in vegetation
zones. This bees are one of the responsible of the pollination in the Archipelagos. They
principal visit Santa Cruz because they have a special flower with a lot of pollen.
One of the flowers is:

● Parkinsonia aculeata
● Waltheria ovata
● Hibiscus
● Lycopersicon cheesmanii var

PROBLEMS AND TREATS

One of the problems of was the way of traveling,


● They survive to el Niño current, Humboldt and more catastrophic events.
● Doesn't have enough of food.
● Invasive species that reduce their population
● Climate change

Behavior

● The carpenter bees are solitary


bees.
● This specie had a strong made of
colonization and they had a very
powerful fly ability. Is considered
that this bee was a lot of time in the
Archipelago, but wasn't a lot of time
like the others animal.
● The carpenter bee doesn't
colonization immediate, like we are
more that 1000 km of continent, it
take time to arrive.
