Principle

Highly selective for Constant potential,

Ammonium / Nitrate no interferences

ΔE = mV  calculation of mg/l
according to Nernst Equation
NH4: Interference mainly by Potassium-ions

For 0.1 mg/l NH4-N:

K+ Compensation needed:
• For VARiON, AmmoLyt
• Manual (settings)
• Dynamic (extra K+ electrode)
NH4: Influence by pH

Ammonium-Ammonia-Equilibrium
NH4+ + OH-  NH3 + H2O

Compensation:
pH < 8.5  not needed
pH > 8.5  needed
NO3: Interference mainly by Chloride-ions

For 0.1 mg/l NO3-N:

Cl- Compensation needed:

• For VARiON, NitraLyt
• Manual (settings)
• Dynamic (extra Cl- electrode)

FAST and precise measurements

NH4-N and NO3-N (mg/l)

Dead time of analyzer : ~ 30 min

Matrix adjustment

3 Steps
1. Sensor stays in process (actual mV
measurement data is stored)
2. Take sample near sensor location,
filter the sample, do Lab analysis
3. Enter reference values
… done
Conventional calibration:
(not recommended, factory calibrated)
Take the sensor out of the process and
use calibration standards
Calibration (conventional) free –
Extraordinary stable electrodes

• Lifetime 18 months
Relative slope in %

• No calibration needed
 Only matrix adjustment

Weeks
Matrix adjustment for initial installation
(with new electrodes)

Important
• Install the sensor in the medium
• Wait for at least ½ h, better 1-3 h, best 12 h for temperature and
matrix adaption
• Check if the signal is stable
Maintenance

Easy cleaning of electrodes

• Use warm water
• ISE membranes protected by
metal grid  plastic brush

Do not use:
• Detergents
• Soaps
As they destroy the ISE
membranes…

Best for cleaning: supernatant process water

Electrode Replacement

Individual electrode replacement

• Not often Lifetime > 18 months
• Recognized automatically
• Matrix adjustment needed
Handling of electrodes

Electrode replacement
• Keep sensor/electrodes dry and clean

• Do not turn sensor up-side-down

Storage
• Reference: 3.0 mol/l KCl
• ISE electrodes: VARiON®/ES-1
standard solution
