Latihan 1 : Merancang Entrance

Seorang saudagar dari Mesir meminta anda untuk membantu memberikan gambar Pra
Rancangan Entrance, sebuah propertynya. Kepada anda hanya diberikan informasi
berupa narasi dan gambar2 yang terdapat dilembar latihan ini. Saudagar tersebut
menginginkan sebuah Entrance yang dapat merangkap sebagai teras, dimana penghuni
dan para tamu dapat berhenti sejenak dan/atau duduk duduk sembari minum kopi sambil
menikmati pemandangan sekitar dan sebagai ruang peralihan sebelum masuk kedalam
bangunan.

Sebagai tambahan informasi, bangunan tersebut berada pada sebuah puncak bukit di
kawasan Brastagi. Kepada anda diminta untuk merancang ENTRANCE yang menurut anda
TERBAIK.

....The principal apartment in the house is called a mandarah (Ills. 4 to 7), which is used for
the reception of guests. It consists of a lofty hall with fountain in the centre, and deep
recesses on two of its opposite, sides, both raised a foot or so above the level of the hall ;
round the more important of these is placed the divan.
The walls are decorated with marble and tiles to a height of about 7 feet or 8 feet from the
floor, intercepted at intervals by recesses or cupboards with elaborate panelled doors, and
sometimes with wall fountains.
The room is lit chiefly by windows in the upper part of the hall, these windows being
formed in plaster, having a sort of tracery with elaborate patterns.
The glass is of various colours, and the section of the plaster is so contrived that, placed as
these windows are high up in the hall, the reflection only of the light coming through the
glass is seen, which gives a softness and a beauty to the light, which must be seen to be
realised.
The ceilings are all of wood, with richly decorated beams, coffers between, and a richly-
painted coved cornice between the soffit of the cornice and the top of the 8-foot dado is a
space which may have been left plain, relieved, or covered with diaper ; now, the only
examples I have seen are decorated with modern landscapes of inferior Italian work.

The following is taken from a description communicated to the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1890
:— The mandarah, of which three illustrations are here given, is that of the house of the mooftee in Cairo.
On the right-handside on entering at A (Ills 4) is the principal liwan (C), the floor of which is raised is
durka'ah (B), with two recesses
