Artifacts & Rationales

Artifact #1: SmartBoard Author Study Presentation.

The first artifact I have included is a Smartboard presentation that I put together for a first-

grade author study. The presentation highlights three different books by Jennifer Ward that connect

with curriculum standards for math, science, and ELA, and include various lesson activities and

games to strengthen lesson objectives while meeting the needs of various learners. I chose to

include this artifact because the presentation provides evidence of my ability to incorporate

technology in the classroom to use interactive activities to deepen learning. Technology allows for

a variety of activities, games, interactive lessons, and visuals that are necessary as we advance and

grow in an technological society. I hope to use technology daily in my own classroom to help the

students interact with the material and become actively engaged in the lesson. Smartboard allows

for creative lesson adaptation and opens up opportunities for more hands-on learning.

I have included professional and curriculum standards that connect with my presentation.

The InTASC standards include fostering a positive learning environment of active engagement,

planning for instruction that considers multiple skills, and instructional strategies that apply

knowledge in meaningful ways, through incorporating technologies. The New York State Code of

Ethics and the Ontario College of Teachers Ethical Standards highlight the care and nurturing of

students that can be seen through the inclusion within my Smartboard presentation. The

presentation meets ISTE Standards for both educators and students, as well as CAEP claims of

modelling and applying technology in the classroom. The lessons and activities within the

presentations meet various curriculum standards including Common Core ELA and Math

Standards, NYS Science Standards, Ontario curricular standards in ELA, Science, and Math. I
have listed the individual standards below that express my ability to meet both professional and

educational standards demonstrating my preparedness to enter the field of education, followed by

the images of my SmartBoard presentation, revealing my technological competencies.

InTASC Standards

Standard #3: Learning Environments The teacher works with others to create environments that

support individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active

engagement in learning, and self-motivation.

3(g) The teacher promotes responsible learner use of interactive technologies to extend the

possibilities for learning locally and globally.

3(m) The teacher knows how to use technologies and how to guide learners to apply them

in appropriate, safe, and effective ways.

Standard #7: Planning for Instruction The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in

meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-

disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context.

7(c) The teacher develops appropriate sequencing of learning experiences and provides

multiple ways to demonstrate knowledge and skill.

7(h) The teacher understands how integrating cross disciplinary skills in instruction

engages learners purposefully in applying content knowledge.

Standard #8: Instructional Strategies The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional

strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their

connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.

8(g) The teacher engages learners in using a range of learning skills and technology tools

to access, interpret, evaluate, and apply information.

8(m) The teacher understands how multiple forms of communication (oral, written,

nonverbal, digital, visual) convey ideas, foster self-expression, and build relationships.

8(n) The teacher knows how to use a wide variety of resources, including human and

technological, to engage students in learning.

8(o) The teacher understands how content and skill development can be supported by

media and technology and knows how to evaluate these resources for quality, accuracy,

and effectiveness.

8(r) The teacher is committed to exploring how the use of new and emerging technologies

can support and promote student learning.

NYS Code of Ethics

Principle 1 Educators nurture the intellectual, physical, emotional, social, and civic potential of

each student. Educators promote growth in all students through the integration of intellectual,

physical, emotional, social and civic learning. They respect the inherent dignity and worth of each

individual. Educators help students to value their own identity, learn more about their cultural

heritage, and practice social and civic responsibilities. They help students to reflect on their own

learning and connect it to their life experience. They engage students in activities that encourage

diverse approaches and solutions to issues, while providing a range of ways for students to

demonstrate their abilities and learning. They foster the development of students who can analyze,

synthesize, evaluate and communicate information effectively.

OCT Ethical Standards

Care

The ethical standard of Care includes compassion, acceptance, interest and insight for developing

students' potential. Members express their commitment to students' well-being and learning

through positive influence, professional judgment and empathy in practice.

CAEP/TEAC Claims

Standard 1. Content and Pedagogical Knowledge The provider ensures that candidates develop a

deep understanding of the critical concepts and principles of their discipline and, by completion,

are able to use discipline-specific practices flexibly to advance the learning of all students toward

attainment of college- and career-readiness standards.

1.5 Providers ensure that candidates model and apply technology standards as they design,

implement and assess learning experiences to engage students and improve learning; and

enrich professional practice.

ISTE Standards for Educators

Standard 2: Leader

C. Model for colleagues the identification, exploration, evaluation, curation and adoption

of new digital resources and tools for learning.

Standard 5. Designer

B. Design authentic learning activities that align with content area standards and use digital

tools and resources to maximize active, deep learning.

ISTE Standards for Students

Standard 1: Empowered Learner

C. Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and

to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

Standard 3: Knowledge Constructor

C. Students curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and methods

to create collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions.
