SAMPARK

ISSUE 2 0 - F Y 1 8 H2
EDITOR’S NOTE
Welcome to the 20th issue of Sampark – MLL’s very own employee newsletter!

Recognizing the need for a more varied content, we have incorporated a few new
sections in Sampark.

Post the IPO, MLL’s interaction with the Media has increased significantly. Hence, we
have given a glimpse of the media coverage for MLL in the recent months.

We want MLLites to be proud of the solutions that we provide to our customers.

Hence, we have featured a case study of the operations that MLL does for Mahindra
Spares Business Unit.

It is said that ‘Knowledge is Power’. We want everyone to leverage this power, and so
we are using this platform to share an article with you on one of the most talked about
topics today – the Block Chain technology.

Acquiring knowledge is important, but of what relevance is knowledge, if we cannot put

it to use? Mind Games, the case study competition by Mahindra Partners, is a brilliant
platform for us to challenge our minds and learn something outside of our work
purview. We, at MLL, have some brilliant minds who have managed to reach the finals
of Mind Games Season 4. Let’s find out their success formula through this issue of
Sampark.

We sincerely hope that you enjoy reading this issue. We would love to receive your
comments or queries on mail.marketing@mahindra.com

Thanks and regards,

FROM THE CEO’S DESK
Team MLL,

F’18 has been a historic year for MLL – not just because we went public, no denying
the fact that our IPO has been our biggest achievement so far; but also because of our
phenomenal financial results:
• Revenues up 28%, crosses Rs. 3400 Cr,
• PBT up 51%, crosses Rs. 100 Cr milestone in FY 18

Our Mahindra as well as non-Mahindra business continued the growth momentum. We have also
managed the major transitions like GST and E-Way bill effectively.

We began FY’19 with a new vision – RISE to be an INR 6000 crore Logistics Service Provider by
2020 (March 2021), delivering consistent customer experience in defined industry verticals
through customized, technology driven solutions.

Our focus for FY 2018-19 would be to take steps towards

achieving our vision. Our key priorities for FY’19 are:
 Focus on increasing our profits through:
- Gross Margin expansion
- Control on overhead costs
 Build customer relationships – Strengthen key
account management processes. Focus on growing
business with existing customers
 Adopt technology – Use systems for planning, day to
day transportation / warehousing operations, customer
MIS, and billing
 Develop innovative solutions – Proactively add value
to customers. Build breakthrough businesses for the long
term
 Improve business partner satisfaction – Digitize
transportation procurement and performance
management processes
 Strengthen MLL Network – Increase reach, reduce
costs per kg, and enhance service levels
 Enable the career development of our employees
across management levels
 Emphasize the importance of being on time, every
time. Commit to delivering services on time, submitting
bills on time, and being punctual
 Do good while doing well. Empower the communities
we work with to RISE

I am also excited about the reforms that the government is

bringing about in the logistics sector in terms of favorable
policies and ease of doing business. As one of the largest
3PL players in India, MLL is looking forward to working with
the policy makers to reduce the cost of logistics for the
country.

Warms Regards,
Phil

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

BLOCK CHAIN TECHNOLOGY

What is Blockchain Technology?
The blockchain is an incorruptible digital ledger of economic transactions that can be
programmed to record not just financial transactions but virtually everything of value. The
blockchain technology is probably the best invention since the internet itself. By allowing
digital information to be distributed but not copied, it allows value exchange without the
need for trust or for a central authority.

Where all can it be leveraged?

Originally devised for the digital currency, Bitcoin, the tech community is now finding
other potential uses for the technology. Blockchain serves as a bookkeeping platform or
ledger that is incorruptible, enforces transparency, and bypasses censorship. By tackling
issues of financial, political and institutional corruption, this has the potential to create
massive social change and greatly protect the human rights of every individual.
We’re already seeing some of this amazing work unfold in some countries. Here’s how:
Tacking the Refugee Crisis - This year, the UNWFP sent over 10,000 Syrian refugees
cryptocurrency-based vouchers. The opportunity to bypass bureaucracy and international
uncertainty with block chain technology not only gives refugees direct access to
donations, but stands as a huge first step in including them in dialogue aimed at solving
the international refugee crisis.
Creating financial avenues for the world's most impoverished people Blockchain
can act as a bank-like institution for people without bank accounts. As long as you have
access to a smartphone, you’ll have a way to conveniently access money. Additionally,
blockchain is a decentralized system, which means you don’t get charged to transfer
money the way you would with typical financial institutions.
Preventing voter fraud - Blockchain technology has the ability to provide an
unhackable electronic vote-counting system. This system can secure an election during
voter registration, and can account for the voters identification and insure votes cannot
be tampered with at a later date.
Improving Government Efficiency - Government processes can be slow, difficult to
understand, and highly susceptible to corruption. Blockchain, as a solution, can aid
governments in being more efficient and secure in every sense.
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

BLOCK CHAIN TECHNOLOGY

How will Blockchain transform the Supply Chain And Logistics Industry?
Managing today’s supply chains all the links to creating and distributing goods is
extraordinarily complex. Depending on the product, the supply chain can span over
hundreds of stages, multiple geographical (international) locations, a multitude of
invoices and payments, have several individuals and entities involved, and extend over
months of time. Due to the complexity and lack of transparency of our current supply
chains, there is interest in how blockchains might transform the supply chain and logistics
industry.
Blockchain essentially a distributed, digital ledger has many applications and can be
used for any exchange, agreements/contracts, tracking and, of course, payment. Since
every transaction is recorded on a block and across multiple copies of the ledger that are
distributed over many nodes (computers), it is highly transparent. It’s also highly secure
since every block links to the one before it and after it. There is not one central authority
over the blockchain, and it’s extremely efficient and scalable. Ultimately, blockchain can
increase the efficiency and transparency of supply chains and positively impact
everything from warehousing to delivery to payment.
The very things that are necessary for reliability and integrity in a supply chain are
provided by blockchain. Blockchain provides consensusŬthere is no dispute in the chain
regarding transactions because all entities on the chain have the same version of the
ledger. Everyone on the blockchain can see the chain of ownership for an asset on the
blockchain. Records on the blockchain cannot be erased which is important for a
transparent supply chain.
Overall, the blockchain technology has the potential to revolutionize several industries
from advertising to energy distribution. Its main power lies in its abilities of not requiring
trust and being decentralized.

Case Description: Mahindra Water Utilities Limited (MWUL)

is a division of Mahindra Partners, involved in the operations
and maintenance of the Tirupur Water Supply Project in Tamil
Nadu.
It’s a PPP project along with NTADCL, a government
organisation responsible for catering to water supply needs of
Tirupur.
Proposed Solution: MLL team, ‘Aquazars’,
MWUL currently handles 6 filling stations with a total of 13 suggested developing an integrated system
filling points. The management currently wants to automate consisting of a mobile app, for online payments
the operations, reduce manpower, digitize data and reports, and booking of orders, along with sensors and
and automate the payment and billing process to reduce risk automated valves for remotely executing the
of cash handling. tanker filling operations.

Team Aquazar shares their experience:

“We were excited to participate in Mind Games Season 4 as it would give us an opportunity to work on a new domain
outside of our company. It pushed us to think out of box, balancing innovation with on the ground implementation
challenges and contingencies. From the start, we knew that time management was critical to deliver, on both our work
commitments and the competition timelines. We setup a recurring meeting to spend 2 hours daily together,
brainstorming and conceptualizing the solution.
We put ourselves in the shoes of the customer as well as MWUL executive, to think of scenarios where the solution
may or may not work.
Our solution gradually evolved from being focused only on the deliverables of the case, to making it crisp and
complete, to the point, where the management can just hand it over to MWUL and implement right away!
Mr. Rengadurai, our MWUL company buddy, was extremely helpful and approachable. We would also like to thank,
Mr. Mehernosh Mehta and Mrs. Rama Malik, for their support and encouragement during our journey. They guided us
at every stage by giving critical suggestions that made our solution detailed and complete in all aspects and made our
presentation more impactful.
The judges appreciated our primary research and the solution detailing including implementation and business
contingency plan. In the final round, the jury along with the esteemed audience, were fascinated by the presentation,
especially the video!
Thank you Mind Games for enabling us to have an enriching experience! We urge all of you to leverage this platform
and seek your own learning & growth…”
