Observation 3:

Child’s/Children’s Name/s: NAYSA

Date: 18-08-2018

What is the context? (Who is present, what are they doing, what happened prior to this etc.)

Naysa sits at the art table, where she draws using crayons. She takes a strip of paper
and draws her family, mother, father, sister and her. I asked her what was the last
figure. She says, “It is a flower because a like flowers.” She also writes her name
starting with a capital N following small letters.

What did the child/children do? (Write a detailed observation, and/or include a photograph and/or a
sample -e.g. writing or drawing - and how the child created the sample or what they were doing in the photograph)

At the art table, Naysa is seen to be drawing different family figures using crayons.
During the activity, writes her name, where she demonstrates high level of literacy
with awareness of capital and small letters. She also advances her fine motor skills by
scribbling in horizontal, vertical and circular directions. She was seen to be passing
her colours to her friend. She also shows preference for natural resources by drawing
a flower at the end of the picture “Children are connected with and contribute to their
world’, outcome 2, the EYLF (DEEWR, 2014). Toward the end, she said she wanted
to keep the drawing in her bag as it was for her family.

What can I do to extend the child’s learning or development and/or to promote positive
dispositions and/or build positive relationships and promote interactions?

 I will plan more activities that refine Naysa’s fine motor skills.
 Dramatic play using family figures to foster her sense of belonging
 More activities to build her knowledge of the concepts of print
