INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES (s) (Lesson Objective(s)*)

After a class discussion and introductory lesson on one step word problems involving situations
of adding to 10, students will correctly solve one step word problems adding to 10, complete a
How Many Pumpkins? Worksheet, where the students will correctly answer 4 out of 5 questions.

NYS-CCLS / +NYS STANDARDS AND INDICATORS

Math Standard: New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards (2017)

NY-1.OA Operations and Algebraic Thinking. Represent and solve problems involving

addition and subtraction. 1. Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve one step word

problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and/or

comparing, with unknowns in all positions. Note: Problems should be represented using objects,

drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number. Problems should be solved

using objects or drawings, and equations.

Indicator: The standard will be evident when the students answer 4 out of 5 one stop
math word problems adding to 10 questions correctly on the How Many Pumpkins? Worksheet.

Comprehension and Collaboration

1SL1a: Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions and participate by actively listening,
taking turns, and staying on topic.

Indicator: This will be evident when the students participate in group lesson and turn and
talk discussion regarding their Jack-O-Lanterns made on the Starfall website.

INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES

(Pick a pumpkin game and decorate it so it becomes a Jack O Lantern Game)
• How Many Pumpkins? Worksheet

• Flipgrid
• Multi colored math manipulatives

MOTIVATION (Engaging the learner(s)*)

• Students will be directed to use their Chromebooks and go to the website

http://more2.starfall.com/n/holiday/halloween/load.htm?f&n=main&redir=www, where

they will pick one pumpkin (out of choice of five pumpkins) to decorate as a Jack-O-

Lantern. There is a lot of opportunity for math related questions while the students are

doing this fun, technology-driven interactive activity. This activity will get the students

excited for Fall, and all the Fall related holidays, including Halloween! (Can anyone tell

me the different shapes of the pumpkins?!) (If you start with 5 pumpkins, then take 1

away to use it to turn it into a Jack-O-Lantern, how many pumpkins are you left with?)

DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES

(including Key Questions)

1. Students will be directed to use their Chromebooks and go to the website

http://more2.starfall.com/n/holiday/halloween/load.htm?f&n=main&redir=www, where

they will pick one pumpkin (out of choice of five pumpkins) to decorate as a Jack-O-

2. Students will be directed to “Turn and talk” to their neighbor to discuss how their Jack-

O-Lanterns created on StarFall.com are similar and how they are different.

3. Teacher will walk around during the “Turn and talk” to ensure students are staying on

topic. (Did any group choose the same eyes? How many eyes did both partners have in

total? What shapes do the eyes look like?)

4. Teacher will lead a lesson at the Smartboard on one step addition within 20 utilizing math

manipulatives.

5. Students will break into their pre-established cooperative learning groups and work on

one step addition word problems using different color manipulatives. Orange will

represent pumpkins, green can be leaves, etc.

6. Teacher will walk around the room while students are in their cooperative learning

groups and assist and ask further questions based on the group’s ability. (If you have 4

orange pumpkins, then add 5 pumpkins, how many do you have now?!)

7. Teacher will distribute How Many Pumpkins? Worksheet and students will work on it

independently.

8. When students complete the worksheet, teacher will go over key points in the lesson

(blank plus 6 pumpkins equals 10 pumpkins).

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES (Learning Strategies*)

Strategy: Demonstration

Indicator: This will be evident when the teacher shows and explains utilizing multi-

colored math manipulatives, the correct way to solve one step word problems.

Strategy: Direct Instruction

Indicator: This will be evident when the teacher teaches an introductory lesson about

one step word problems.

Strategy: Turn and Talk

Indicator: This will be evident when students turn and talk with their partner about their Jack-

O-Lantern they created on Starfall.com.

ADAPTATIONS (Exceptionality*)

• Student with high functioning autism, who is nonverbal, will use his high tech speech

generating device, which utilizes Touchchat with WordPower, to communicate during the

“Turn & Talk”

• Student with ADHD and who is easily distracted will directed to a timer on his

ChromeBook. The timer will keep the student on task. The student will have to first

complete his Worksheet and Jack-O-Lantern within the timeframe, then he can stretch or

get a drink of water, but only after the computer timer has counted down.

DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION

Struggling Students
Will answer 3 out of 5 questions correctly on the How Many Pumpkins? Worksheet.

Average Students
Will answer 4 out of 5 questions correctly on the How Many Pumpkins? Worksheet.

Advanced Students

Will answer 5 out of 5 questions correctly on the How Many Pumpkins? Worksheet.

ASSESSMENT (artifacts* and assessment [formal & informal]*)

Informal: Teacher will monitor pairs of students during the cooperative learning utiliziting the

multi colored math manipulatives.

Formal: Students will complete a How Many Pumpkins? Worksheet, where the students will

correctly answer 4 out of 5 questions.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Following the lesson on one step word problems within 20, students will create a Flipgrid of

other items found in nature (besides pumpkins), that they can use to group together and create

one step addition word problems within 20. Some examples can be leaves that are FALL-ing

from trees, rocks, shells, etc. They will share their ideas and equations with their peers via

Flipgrid. This will encourage students to get outside and into nature and to also practice what

they learned in class!

FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES: DIRECT TEACHER INTERVENTION AND

ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT

Direct Teacher Intervention

The teacher will direct students to use their Chromebooks and go to Khan Academy for their

lesson on one step addition word problems. https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-1st-grade-

math/cc-1st-add-subtract/modal/v/adding-within-20

It might be easier for students to watch the lesson at the own pace, and re-watch areas they are

having trouble with. The teacher will be walking around and going from student to student

making sure they are staying on task, as well as answering any questions that may arise.

Academic Enrichment

Students will create a word search on Google Documents on their Chromebook using the new

math and Fall vocabulary learned in the lesson.
