ABSTRACT

Dyes are important class of pollutant and can even be identified by human eye.
Disposal of dyes in precious fresh water resources must be avoided, however,
and for that various treatment technologies are in use.

Dye degradation is a process in which the large dye molecules are broken down
chemically into smaller molecules. Dye molecules persist in the
environment because many of them are not reactive towards light, acids, bases
and oxygen to the deep impact on the environment, the treatment of waste water
from textile industries constitutes an issue of major economic and environmental
concern.

In the current study, it is intended to use electrolysis to reduce the dye content of
waste water ensuring that the water is less toxic. The expected resulting products
are water, carbon dioxide, and mineral by-products that give the original dye its
colour.

An experimental design is proposed for the optimization of electro-

oxidation process to supplement the degradation of C.I Reactive Blue in
wastewater. The design is employed to study the effect of variables on colour
and COD removal using graphite electrodes in presence of NaCl as electrolyte.
The experiments are designed as the function of variables such as pH, NaCl
concentration (M), and electrolysis time (min). The experimental results are
to be analysed in a UV- spectrophotometer. Calibration of the UV-
spectrophotometer must be done both before and after electrolysis.
