In “Parental Encouragement, Career and Financial Growth motivate first-generation

students to attend college, UCLA Survey reveals” the real statistics of first-generation students. 47

percent of first-generation students say parental encouragement is a very important reason for

attending college. Three reasons why first-generation students go to college is also to get a better

job, make more money, and prepare for graduate school. In 1971, 38.5 percent of full-time

freshman’s were first-generation students. By 2005, it declined to 15.9 percent and that’s the

lowest mark. Studies have also proven that they work more in high school to expect to pay for

college expense by themselves.

I agree with a lot of the facts they brought up in this article. I also strive for my parent’s

support, that’s one of the main reasons I’m attending college. The other reasons are to be able to

get a good paying job one day hopefully.
