Project 3 – Reflection
For project 3, our group created a recommendations report. The purpose of the report was to
recommend to the School of Engineering at the University of New Mexico what specific problems should
be addressed more and give ideas for how to address them. Our goal was that the School of Engineering
would implement at least some of the suggestions in order to improve the situation. We chose to focus
on the problem of low diversity at the University of New Mexico, especially in the engineering
departments. Therefore, the purpose for writing this report (SLO 9) goes beyond just the University of
New Mexico – diversity of engineering students affects the diversity in the engineering industry. In order
to achieve this purpose, we focused our solutions not only on simply increasing the diversity statistics at
UNM, but also on how to make current students more open-minded so that they would be more willing
to accept and want to work with more diverse individuals.

The audience for the recommendations report is the management of the School of Engineering
because they are the only group of people who have the ability to implement such changes in the
department. Additionally, the secondary audience is engineering students at UNM (SLO 2) because even
if the SOE management doesn’t agree with these ideas, students can help to promote these ideas so
that they would attract more attention and, therefore, increase the likelihood that these solutions are
considered by the SOE. Since the SOE management is the main audience, we made the report
professional-looking so that it would feel more confident and trustworthy. In order to attract students
as well, we planned the report around real life examples and statistics that affect students (SLO 1)
because that helps to make the report more engaging.

There isn’t anything else that the I would want my instructor to know when evaluating this
project.
