Title of Lesson: The Natural Sceinces CH 3

Teacher: Karla Pantaleon
School: University of Illinois
Grade Level[s]: Seniors
Date to be Taught: 10-9-18

Big Idea that drives Lesson/Unit:

The differences between science and art are not as clear cut as we may initially perceive.
Understanding science and its methods, processes and forms can allow for a better integration process
in the art classroom. Science comes in many forms and is divided into many sub-categories whish all
fall into three general categories. These include physical sciences, earth and space sciences, and life
sciences. In its simplest form science seeks to answer questions about the natural world through
investigation, use of models for analysis, construct explanations through evaluation that comes from
clear evidence. In contrast art’s main purpose leads more towards posing questions rather than answer
them. Art is not limited to that of evidence based information. Art is not limited to the physical world
and uses imagination.

Fine Arts Goals Met by the Objectives:

 VA:Cr2.3.II a. Redesign an object, system, place, or design in response to contemporary issues.

 VA:Re7.1.I a. Hypothesize ways in which art influences perception and understanding of
human experiences.
 VA:Re7.1.III a. Analyze how responses to art develop over time based on knowledge of, and
experience with, art and life.

Vocabulary Acquisition:
 Concepts – connections that can explain information
 Theory – a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one
based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained.
 Intuition – the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious
reasoning.
 Model – a system or thing used as an example to follow or imitate.

Key Artistic Concepts:

 Drawings using colored pencils and/or markers
 Develop a drawing using an object found in nature using your imagination and prior knowledge
of science and the natural world.

Artmaking Materials Needed:

 White drawing paper, 9 x 12”, one piece per student

 One pack of Crayola markers per student
 One pack of Crayola colored pencils per student
 One pencil per student

Contemporary/Historical/Multicultural/Literature exemplars:
 TEXT: Art Centered Learning Across the Curriculum
 Artist: Hyungkoo Lee, A01, 2005

Procedures:
 DISCUSSION: (5- 15 minutes)
o Schedule [Agenda]
o Discuss what science is and what purpose it serves in our world.
o Discuss what art is and what purpose it serves in our world.
o Think about how are science and art similar and how are they different?
o Purpose, Knowledge, Methods, Forms of science
o Points of integration
 Purpose
 Knowledge
 Methods and creative process
 Forms
o Teaching Art, keeping science in mind
 Art and science complement each other.
 Science’s use of metaphors and art’s use of metaphors
 DEMONSTRATIONS: ( 3-5 minutes)
o These are the techniques we will be using on this projects (drawing, colored pencils and
markers)
 I will show students and object that I have picked out from nature and my brief analysis
of what purpose it serves in nature. I will then Construct a different purpose for this
object thinking about possible its evolution and maybe its place in a different universe.
o Show teacher made exemplar to class as I create it.
o Show Historical/Multicultural exemplars
 Show Hyungkoo Lee, A01and his imagination of the bugs bunny skull. Create
something we understand from something that does not have concrete meaning through
evidence like a cartoon. Links The imagination to the real world.
 DESIGN/WORK SESSION: ( 15 – 20 minutes)
o As a class we will briefly go outside to collect an object of nature we will be using to reimagine
its purpose.
o Allow students to brainstorm what they will be doing with their objects.
o Students may use the internet to learn more about their object and research.
o After work time students will share out what they have created.
 CLEAN UP: ( 3-5 minutes)
o Names on drawings (to be collected)
o Materials are returned to the back tables
o Everyone comes back to take a seat.

 CLOSURE: ( 3-5 minutes)

o How are science and art similar and how are they different?
o What purpose, knowledge, method, and forms do they both take?
o How can we use art to better understand the natural world around us?
