Data Collection at Family Child Learning Center
Data was collected during observations of a 3 year old boy with Autism Spectrum Disorder,
recording imitated utterances versus spontaneous utterances throughout a 1 hour session.
Operational Definitions:
Imitated Utterances - A verbalization produced by the child immediately after a model of the
same word or phrase is spoken by another communication partner. The utterance is not counted
as imitated if a model was not provided or if additional words occurred in between the model
and the target word or phrase. Approximations of the targeted production are accepted.
Spontaneous Utterances - A verbalization produced by the child where a model was not
provided immediately before the production occurred. Approximations of words or phrases are
counted when paired with an appropriate semantic meaning. A model of the word or phrase can
occur previously within the session, as long as other verbalizations have occurred in between the
model and the target word or phrase.
