The document describes two biology experiments, one on mitosis and one on meiosis. The mitosis experiment involves observing onion root tip and fish blastula cells under a microscope, categorizing the cell cycle phase of over 200 cells, calculating the percentage and time spent in each phase, and comparing the cell cycles of plant and animal cells. The meiosis experiment involves categorizing asci from Sordaria fimicola perithecium micrographs as demonstrating crossover or not, determining the distance between a gene and centromere in map units, and describing meiotic spore production, crossover percentage, and the relationship between a gene locus and crossover percentage.

1. Observe prepared slides of onion root tips up to 400x magnification.
2. Observe at least 200 different cells in the apical meristem region. 3. Catagorize each cell as to the cell cycle phase (Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase, Cytokinesis). 4. Calculate the percentage of cells in each phase and the time (in minutes) that the onion cells are in each phase to accurately describe the cell cycle of onion apical meristem cells. 5. Repeat this process for the prepared slides of fish blastula cells. 6. Compare and contrast the cell cycles and definitive conditions of the plant and animal cells. Experiment 2 – Meiosis
1. Using the Ward’s micrographs of Sordaria fimicola perithecium, categorize at
least 50 different asci as to those that demonstrate crossover and those that do not. 2. Determine the distance between the gene for spore color and the centromere in map units. 3. Describe the process of meiotic spore production in Sordaria fimicola, the crossover percentage, and the relationship of the locus of the gene for spore color to the crossover percentage.
