Dear Dr . Jako:

Your l~tter to Mi cha.el Deaver has been referred to mt, for

response. I regret the delay in this reply, but I can assure
you that we wer~ pleased to hear frcm you and to receive your
words o f friendship and support.
Your comments on the t~levision progr am •The Day After• have been
noted. '?he President has s tated his determination that nuclear
war must not be allowe d to happen, but he has also empha:;\ized that
all thre e Qlements o.f United State s policy -- deterrenca , modern-
ization of our nuclear arsenal, and negotiations for significant
reductions in nuclear arms -- are absolutely necessar~)' to prevent
war . He belie ves that educational programs about nuclear arms
which do not tak~ all of these aleme.nts into account are 1.ncom--
plete . As the President state d on Decew.ber 8 at the National
Conference on Exce llence i n Education ; "In schools across t.he
country r s tude. !1ts ar:e being taught th,i dangers of nuclear weapons
and the burdens of natio nal defense . Well let's make certain they
understand not only the price o f defending America but the price
of failing to. As students from St . George's Univr,,: rsity School
of Medicine l e arned in GrAnada, freedom is not free. It can be
easi l y lost. , but is worth sticking up for."
The Pres.ident is determined to keep Ame.r i cn. strong , free and at
peace with the world . H~ believes that these goal~ are not con-
tradictory but complementary. As a result , 1984 can be a year o f
opportunities f or peace -- not a fal s e peace of complac~ncy, but a
true peace based on democr ac y , justice and respect for human dig-
nity . You r comments are appreciated , and the President has asked
me to send you his warm b~ s t wishe s .

Since rely,

Dear Mr. Deaver:

I wruld like to pass a suggestion along to the White

House relating to the over-advertised TV progran "THE DA.Y

AFTER" which will be shown in the next few days. This hor-

rible show just gives a very strong indication to develop

the defense curfain with lasers which the President described

last March. If cne looks at the show with the above inter-

pretation in mind, then one can consider this film to support

the President's defense policies.

Sincerely yours,

~ ~ / Z:.,

Dear Mr. Kraemer:

I found your presentation the other night "Grotmd
Zero" very teITify1ng. Certainly no one 1n his right
mind would like to see such a t errible disaster happeno
Such a disaster could happen only if the nuclear force
of the USSR would attack our country.
My reaction to your program was that we should make
every effort to support the u. s. military developrrent
so that 1n case of an attack, such a disaster could be
prevented or minimized o More attention should also be
paid to civil defense. The IBSR and t heir satell ites
have a ITDlCh better civi l defense system tllan we here in
the USA.
After seeing your presentation, I am inclined to
say that President Reagan is right trat our country ras
to be military strong.
Sincerely yours,

t~r~~
