- Sackbut

- Plays in the range of the human voice, was used to double voices to keep them on pitch
- Used for its tone and dynamic range

- Saw first orchestral use in Beethoven’s 5th Symphony


- Around 1830 a valved trombone was designed and widely used for the next century
Contemporary History

- Trombone came to America in the mid 1700s


- Both slide and valve versions
- Increased in popularity with various ensembles throughout 19th Century
- Marching bands, New Orleans Jazz
- Modern design of slide trombone solidified by C.G. Conn around this time
- Now a staple of modern concert, jazz, and orchestral music

more open and unified sound.

Bass Trombone - pitched in Bb, commonly have F and D triggers which change the key

Tenor Trombone - pitched in Bb, non transposing and the most common trombone

Alto Trombone - pitched in Eb, not common but occasionally used

Soprano Trombone - pitched in Bb (one octave above tenor)
