Time
(min.) Process Components
3 *Anticipatory Set
What are some movies you all have seen recently? Take about five examples.

1 *State the Objectives (grade-level terms)

I can find the main character and determine their character development throughout the
story.

2 *Instructional Input or Procedure

In almost every single movie, book, tv show, and even some video games that we see,
there is some type of character development. Can anyone tell me what they think
character development is? Talk with your friend about a recent movie you have seen and
how the main character developed.
1 *Modeling
TTW talk about character development:
Would anyone like to share their examples of a character changing throughout a movie?
TTW share her own example.
7 *Check for Understanding
TSW make a timeline about the character development of the movie they saw or the book
they read using the sheet attached.

1 *Guided Practice
Talk about how the author doesn’t always say what the character is, how they describe
their feelings and actions rather than just say “she was sad” reference Gilly.
Show them teacher example of the story they are about to make
15 *Independent Practice
TSW make their own stories that show character development. First they write the rough
draft, then they check it and have two other students check it, then they write the final draft
on the attached outline of the book. Students may work alone or with partners. After about
3 minutes of working ask if anyone wants to share the beginning of their stories and tweak
them to make sure all students are on task and understand the goal.
(After Assessment
) Check the student’s stories to make sure they understand the concept.

5 *Closure
Students share stories with the class!

Differentiation Strategies (enrichment, accommodations, remediation, or by learning style).

Students write, draw, talk, and listen during this activity therefore catering to many different learning
styles. Students can work alone or in pairs.
Classroom Management Issues (optional)
Lesson Critique. To be completed following the lesson. Did your students meet the objective(s)? What part
of the lesson would you change? Why?
Doing this lesson twice (since it is a switch class) I critiqued the first round and fixed the second
round. Don’t let the students use markers next time because they bleed through the paper. Noise
level is high when working in pairs so maybe solo next time? Also, include a graphic organizer for
them to base their stories on before they write them this way they are even more on point with the
objectives.
