SAGE

Hello, and welcome to our board game: Land of Candy. I am Sage, and this is Thomas, Josh, and
Olivia. Land of candy is a fun way to witness and learn about chemicals in a brand new way.
This game features multiple chemical reactions along with hidden treats along the way! Here are
the rules of our game:
1. Choose your favorite piece of candy as your game piece. Make sure they’re all different!
2. Whoever chose the Twix starts, and the rotation is counterclockwise from there.
3. Whoever’s turn it is must take the top card from the pile labeled “unused card”.
4. Read what the car says out loud, and follow the instructions telling you where to move
your game piece. Be Careful! Some cards have special instructions on the backside that
should also be followed and read aloud.
5. Once the card’s instructions are completed, place the already drawn cards in the pile
labeled “Used Cards” FACE DOWN. Then, the next player may start their turn.
6. When someone reaches the finish line, follow the instructions written on the finish card
to inflate the lollipop!
Let’s start playing.

OLIVIA

Now we’re going to talk to you a little about the chemical reactions featured in Candy land. One
reaction featured in Land of Candy is a single replacement reaction, featuring Aluminum and
Copper Nitrate. A single replacement reaction, also known as a single reaction or
single-displacement reaction, is where an element reacts with a compound and replaces an
element in that compound. This is often represented using A, B, and C blocks. In this case,
Aluminum (Al) and Copper Nitrate (Cu(NO3)2) react to form Copper (Cu(s)) and Aluminum
Nitrate (Al(NO3)3(s)). This product was chosen specifically because it’s capabilities to dissolve
some substances. For our game, the solution dissolves a piece of aluminum foil, breaking a chain
and lighting an LED. We know this works because of the reactivity series.

JOSH

Another reaction featured in Land of Candy is a double replacement reaction, featuring Sodium
Acetate and Iron(III) Chloride. A double replacement reaction, also known as a double
reaction or metathesis reaction, is where the anions and cations switch between two reactants,
forming new products. This reaction is often represented using A, B, C, and D blocks. For our
reaction, Sodium Acetate (C2H3NaO2) and Iron(III) Chloride (FeCl3) react to form Iron Acetate
(Fe(C2H3O2)2(s)) and Sodium Chloride (NaCl(s)). We chose this combination due to the color it
creates when Sodium Acetate and Iron(III) Chloride are mixed. The solution is supposed to be a
vibrant orange, which we integrated into our Land of Candy theme by creating a Candy Corn.

THOMAS

Finally, our Land of Candy features a creation of gas. We created gas by mixing vinegar
(HCH3COO(s)) and baking soda ( NaHCO3(s)) to create Carbon (CO2(s)), water H20(l), and sodium
acetate (NaC2H302(s)). This is an acid-based reaction. We use this reaction to create carbon which
inflates the balloon on top of a large pipe. This is meant to imitate a lollipop, tying into our
candy theme. Thank you for listening and we hope you enjoyed our game.
