STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Structural engineering was always my motive. I would have lot of queries about how a structure is made,
how different components are combined to form a complete structure, visualization playing in my mind
seeing anything. I completed Bachelor in Civil Engineering from my home country,Nepal. I always felt
necessity of gaining knowledge in the structural and technical backgrounds. I believe, as a civil engineer,
understanding the structures of the simple and complex geometric construction are the most essential
components for the development of the stable and safe construction so I was very eager contribute
towards the society in the field of structural engineering.

However later I found out that the experimental work has equal importance as theoretical. To be more
concrete, theories remain like fairy tale if it could not be applied in. So, I came in this country hoping to
upgrade myself as M.Tech student that would provide me a better platform to answer all the queries about
the practical aspect of every construction. Hence I am pursing my M.Tech in Structural Engineering in
Jawaharlal Nehru Technical University, Hyderabad which has been an excellent teacher for the
development of my structural concept towards civil engineering. And the research work which I would be
undertaking during my M.Tech would certainly make my dream come true. I am lured to join one of the
best research center of the country and carry research in one of the aforementioned fields.

My interest developed in the field of bridge engineering after I found out that most of the bridges that are
present in my country are dependent on very old designs of which the structural drawings are not to be
found, most of them have already completed their design life period, not sustainable amount of
maintenance has been carried out and due to facing several earthquakes they are in a condition of extreme
fatigueness during my working years. So collectively it can be said that failure of bridges that are present
in my country may lead to national hazard as whole country is connected within through large number of
bridges. So, I decided to apply as a interested researcher in the field of bridge engineering in the CSIR-
SERC that matches my research interest.

Some of the research works carried out in CSIR-SERC were analysis and design of steel, reinforced and
pre-stressed concrete bridges, expert system for condition assessment of bridge, forced and ambient
vibration testing and experimental modal analysis of bridge structure which immediately grabbed my
attention.

If given the opportunity to be admitted, I will make most use of it fulfilling my objective while
performing to the level of standard and expectation of the research center. My sheer interest for Research
and conductive environment of the CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Center at Chennai would
definitely motivate and inspire me to pursue my noble ambitions.
