Customer Stories: WTD 52 - Germany

The German Federal Armed Forces Technical Center for Protective and Special Technologies - WTD
52 – is well known because of its achievements in developing new, cutting edge protection
technologies. It offers a unique infrastructure for both testing and simulation of the performance of
military equipment.

Since the mid 90’s, WTD 52 is extensively using AUTODYN for numerical analysis of explosion loads
and its effects on (hardened) structures. Some typical simulations conducted regularly at WTD 52
using AUTODYN, include:

• Detonation, blast wave propagation and its

effects on buildings and vehicles
• Effects of artillery and mortar grenade onto
various shelter designs
• Contact detonation onto concrete structures
• Performance of sand-filled barricades for
protection of containerized ammunition in
storage

Testimonial
“By conducting these AUTODYN simulations prior to the physical test, WTD 52 is able to reduce the
number of costly tests and to enhance the quality of the experimental investigations. As a result,
time and cost savings can be achieved in most cases.”

Dipl.-Ing. M. Klaus – Deputy Director of Center for Protective and Special Technologies WTD 52
