Introduction
School is known to be one of the most effective learning facilities to the students;
therefore it has an important role affecting the student’s both academic and social performance.
One of the easiest ways to improve the school environment is to have the appropriate facilities
for the teachers, for them to effectively employ their skill in teaching and most importantly it
should be appropriate for the student’s needs in learning. An efficient school is a place wherethe
students can meet new possibilities and gives them the opportunity to nurture their own
potentials. The efficiency of schools is attained by using all the proper resources the school has
and deploying them in a way that best supports the students’ performance.
More than other building types, school facilities have a profound impact on their
occupants and the functions of the building, namely teaching and learning(Vaughan L.E and
Steven winters associate Inc). The facilities should be safe, accessible and efficient for the
students needs. According to the US General Accounting Office (GAO) almost three-fourths of
existing US schools in 1996 was constructed before 1970. Of these schools, about one-third of
schools had need of extensive repair or replacement and almost two-thirds had at least one
inadequate building feature such as substandard plumbing, roofing, or electrical systems.
Moreover, 58-percent had at least one unsatisfactory environmental condition such as
inadequate ventilation, acoustics, or physical security (PenState,2015).
Poor facilities schools such as public schools, signifies that student are not receiving
their rights of having a sufficiently available and well-maintained facilities. The qualifications or
indications are having lack of school facilities is when there are lack of comfort rooms,
overcrowded rooms, poor ventilation, unsanitary and crowded canteen and more. Inadequate
facilities in schools can affect the academic performances of the students.
The reason for studying this research is to find out factors affecting the efficiency of
facilities. It was conducted for the school to gain awareness of the factors and be able to make
changes.
Purpose of the Study
Schools nowadays spend a lot of money every year for building and improving facilities,
and how they spend it has a profound impact to the student’s achievement and their future
prospects. An efficient school is a central to the country’s future prosperity (Hasushek and
Woessman,2010). The purpose of this study is to review the school facilities efficiency and to
maximize the school’s facilities that make the greatest difference to student’s performance
(Nicoletti and Rabe,2012).It is important to analyze and evaluate a facility from the system level,
then develop procedures to attain the most efficient systems integration.
This study aims to answer the following questions:
1. What is the importance of facilities to the students?
2. How effective is the use of facilities in school?
3. Are the facilities in UIC efficient for the students need?
Beneficiaries
This study helps the school to review the school’s efficiency and drive the school’s
overall performance to even greater outcomes. Also it helps the students of the University of the
Immaculate Conception because improving the school facilities will be effective to the students.
Teachers can also benefit in this study, for this study aims solve problems causing the efficiency
in school facilities and could improve the teachers teaching styles. Department of Education can
also benefit in this study because it could be an eye opener for those schools that is lacking of
facilities.
