How can Nokia come back

Introduction:
It is a business research proposal that based on deckling the NOKIA Corporation performance.
In this study over aim is how will NOKIA strike back in market and retain his old position. It is a
number one mobile company in 2010 but after the competition in market his decline starts. They
used many strategies for gained his position but they fail. So in over research we try to abstract
some key points that help NOKIA for come back and capture his market shares. There are some
cause and effects that are related to my search so we need to check the relationship of these
causes .the reason behind the decline of Nokia is market competency. In his first stage Nokia had
no other competitor and he grows very fast. After the passage of time market environment
change and Nokia decline starts.

Background of the study:

Nokia is a Finland based company that incorporated in 1967. It started his business as a pulp,
rubber and cable manufacturing company by knut Fredrik idestam in 1865 (chauhan). Nokia
Corporation created 1967 paper products, car tires, personal computer and cables. In his
beginning they developed a digital switch (Nokia DX 200) which becomes a success for the
company. In 1970 company take interest in the power and electronic businesses. In 1887
consumer electronics became Nokia major business. In 1991 Nokia they made an agreement of
GSM networking with nine European countries. So from 1992-1996 the company progress very
fast due to increase his network. In 1997 they expend his GSM systems business in 31 countries.
It is the leading manufacturer of mobile devices. Nokia offers a wide range of mobile devices
with the experience in music, video, imaging, gaming and a lot more. People love these features
so they start buying Nokia product. Company increases their sale very fast. At the end Nokia
become a number one brand in the world. Nokia mobile problem start when other brand
introduces his new phones with innovative features.

Problem statement:
Nokia became a top mobile brand in the world in 2010 after that his competitors enter in market
like Samsung, I phone, etc. these competitors become problem for Nokia because its market
shares rapidly fall. They used android software that have create much better eco system, Nokia

relay on symbian and his hardware only. Company face critical situation in market his brand
equity decrease. They take a decision to change his product with new innovation so they make a
contract with Microsoft. They introduce window phones but customer rejected these phone
because they are become bore from windows. In the result of these changing Nokia default in
market. Brand use surviving strategies but they did not success. The Company fall his shares
value in market. They lost his customer loyalty because other brand provides the customer better
satisfaction. Customers always want more benefit in less price so his competitors provide the
customer new features in less price. These are the reasons by which Nokia decrease his position.
At the end the company is sold.

Research questions:
 What are the causes behind the failure of Nokia?

 What action is necessary for gaining his position back?

 How will Nokia increase his brand equity?

Research objective:
1. Research first objective is to understand the condition and circumstances
that company face, because without finding the specific reasons that lead
this company toward his failure we cannot overcome the real problem.

2. Second objective of my research is finding solution of the facts that lead

Nokia toward failure because without finding the solution of problem Nokia
will not take his position back.

3. My last objective of this research is to find some significant strategies that

help Nokia to increase his brand equity. So for this purpose I find some
strategies by my research that helps Nokia to compete his competitors.

Significance of study:
Study in this research is very important because by the help of this research Nokia find his
problems. They also find solutions and suggestions that help the company to overcome the loss.
This study is also important for the students because they know the real problems of an
organization by this research. This research has many lessons for the other companies because
they become proactive after study this. There are lots of lessons that you get from the study.

4
Sharab Zafar Research Proposal 9127

There is one important lesson is every Company need to change his product. If you are not
change your product then you fails to change his future. That is the importance of study.

Literature review:
Introduction:
I review the literature with the help of Google and other sources so I want to discuss some
critical prospective about other findings. There are many things and important points that people
discovered before me and they are all important. Therefore I want to disuses them briefly what I
found by review the literature. Literature review is very important because with the help of study
you can easily find a direction. With the help of literature you can easily find some facts and
figures about your study. In review you study some past researches that take place with different
researchers. You get help and start his research with different direction. By literature review you
get a clear path for data collection and you know what to do next. So first of all a researcher must
need to review the literature.

Abstracting and findings:

Nokia reached at his peak in 2010 and become top brand in market but there are some
competitors that became a problem for Nokia. Samsung black berry and Apple are competitors
of Nokia and they have innovation in their product. Apple after the success in laptop started
mobile business with the name of I phone. Nokia use symbian software but his competitor uses
much faster software that is ISO. In result Nokia decline start people prefer I phone there sale
start decreasing. The value of shares decrease and company face loss. So they think to change the
CEO and find new leader that solve company problem. So they choose Stephen Elop as his
second CEO. He tries to solve the issue but he faces many challenges at last he understands that
the change is only come by changing the product software. Nokia only have hardware they have
no software. Stephen Elop decides to contract with android first but he changes his decision
because he thinks all other companies use this technology we need to do something different. He
finally decides to use window software in his mobile so he contract with Microsoft. In 2011
Nokia launch lumia series with window software but ISO and android have much customer
retention. At last Nokia sold his brand to Microsoft in 5.4 billion euro and that is the end of
Nokia brand. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop last words are “we did not do anything wrong but
somehow we lost (gupta, 2016)”.

Methodology:
It is a section presents an overview of the methods to use in the study. We cover the area with the
help of different methods include the research design, population, sample and sampling
technique, and at last we discuss data collection. This is the most important part of research
because it divides your research in two main parts. Research design and data collection are two
parts of research Methodology. Research design means how we start his research and what are
5
Sharab Zafar Research Proposal 9127

the paradigms that we set before research. In data collection we just set the ways by which we
collect data. We need to collect data in a specific direction. These are the reasons because why
the research methodology is important.

Research design:
I design my research according to the problem in my research I use qualitative data quantitative
data. I also use sampling technique to save my time and abstract clear and easy conclusion. I
research design I use employee reviews customer satisfaction, cost of product company old
profit. I also design some additional techniques for reaching to the main problem that company
face. Researcher need to design his research in simple and easy way. You also need to design his
research in a specific direction. If your research has no direction then it is not a research it is only
a study. You know about a direction by the review of literature. Therefore set your research
design in a specific direction.

Population:
The employee of Nokia Company is my population. In my research I also use other factors that
related with the company and affect or be affected by the company as population. All the
customers that use Nokia mobile are also used as population in my research design. For the
selection of population you need to consider all the members of the organization. You need to
focus on all the members that are the part of your study. So in my research all these factors are
part of population and we abstract some conclusion from the population. The target population
for the study includes the following.

1. Chief Directors and directors of all Nokia company.

2. Coordinating directors, finance officers and other staff of Nokia.

3. Heads and staff members of company.

Sampling and sampling techniques:

In my research it is very difficult to research on total population because the number of data in
research is so huge. In population data is consist of all members so it if difficult to study all the
population. Therefore for complete my research in minimum time I need to take sample from the
population so that I abstract accurate results from the population. Nokia is a huge brand and 1,
02761 employee worked for the company according to research of 2017 (greenfield, 2017). So
we take a little number of employees as sample. Accordingly the research will adopt the survey
type of research in which a sample from the target population will be used for the study. In total,
a sample of 185 elements will be selected from a target population of company. Details of the
sample are as follows.

6
Sharab Zafar Research Proposal 9127

1. 15 chief directors and 30 directors of Nokia Company.

2. 20 coordinating directors, 20 finance officers and 20 other staff of

Nokia.

3. 40 heads of Company and 40 internal staff members.

In this research I use different sampling techniques sampling will start from lower level to upper
level according to the condition. In research we divide different samples into different group so
by the help of grouping we can easily start over research on different samples. Groups are made
according to the characteristics of different samples. This will ensure a fair representation of
each group of institutions since their operations are significantly different.

Data collection:
It is an important part of the research we need to collect data for the purpose of find logical
reasons that lead over research toward the effective conclusion. Research need to collect primary
data and also collect secondary data. Primary data collected from some small researches. Primary
data is very important because for over research because with the help of primary data we found
some key points that missed from the previous researchers. We also need to collect secondary
data in over research because in first step of data collection we need to review secondary data
because some time in reviewing a researcher find some major points that are important. Some
tome researchers are missing something that they find in review the secondary data so in my
research I collect and review both the primary and secondary data.

Data collection instrument:

In my research I used an administering a questionnaire as an instrument of data collection. In this
questionnaire we will use structured questions, consisting of approximately 20 questions divide
into three sections “A” “B” and “C” section A will consist of seven questions seeking to answer
the first research question. Sections B will consist of sic questions covering the second research
question where as section C will consist of questions to test the hypothesis and also answer the
third research questions.

These are the structured questions that I prepare for my research some
changes in questions also possible. These are simple questions to ask from
different samples. We must add some other questions that are based on to give
opinion.

Data analysis:
After prepare my investigation questions I set a way to judge and calculate accurate results. I
write all the opinions and suggestions that come from the attendees. After that we must prepare
data into simple form for over analysis. So with the help of that data we prepare some strategies
that help Nokia to bounce back with his old position in market. Develop a strategy is very
important. A vision without a strategy remains an illusion (Bolman, 2016). So by the help of
clear analysis and by develop an effective strategy Company will gain his position. This is a
process of hard struggle.

Time scale:

June-July 2019: review of literature

August 2019: draft literature review
September 2019: Agree research strategy which used
October 2019: complete collection of primary data
November 2019: Review of questionnaire
December 2019: January 2020: Administer questionnaire
February 2020: final collection of questionnaire
March 2020: Data analysis
April-May: Final writing of project report.

Limitations:
There are some limitations in research. This research is not covering all the fields of company.
Nokia is very huge organization and this research is not enough to cover all the part of the
company. So all the research things that related to this research is covered by this research. I will
start my research under the limitations because some data of this company is unable to access so
I did not have any access to the data.
