India is predominantly an agricultural
country. Due to the progressive increase
in farm produce, a need has been felt to
develop more agro/based food processing
industries to make gainful utilization of the
raw material resources and to provide
remunerative prices to the growers. Maize
is one of the important commercial food
grains grown abundantly in our country.
Main maize growing States in the country
are Punjab, Haryana, U.P., M.P., Bihar,
Karnataka, Rajasthan. The maize is
processed for manufacturing many foods
items, corn oil (Maize Oil) is one of them.
Corn is one of the most successful food,
feed and industrial cereal. Industries
consume 12-15% of corn production in
India. Corn flour, corn oil, cornflake, corn
syrup, popcorn, rice corn and corn soap
are some popular corn products. Corn oil
is a pale yellow oil procured from the kernel
of corn. The first commercial production
of corn oil took place in 1889. Refined
corn oil is tasteless and odorless oil. Corn
oil is used as a cooking medium and for
manufacturing hydrogenated oil. Corn
having oil content of more than 6% is
called high oil corn. The parts of corn seed/
kernel are endosperm (82%), germ (embryo
and scutellum) (12%) (Figure 1 a & b). 80
to 84% of total kernel oil is present in the
germ region followed by 12% in aleurone
and 5% in endosperm.

ALUMINIUM FOIL [EIRI/3211]
Aluminium foil is a thin sheet of metal. As
such it can be an absolute barrier to
moisture, gases, odors, bacteria and
moulds. The high reflectivity of aluminium
ensures good protection against radiant
heat, whilst its opacity is important in
preventing deterioration of a very large
range of foods and drinks which are
affected by light. It is used for packaging
and non packaging uses. The growth of
this industry has been in the recent past,
owing to the growing application of foil in a
variety of products. India is one of the
key producers of aluminium foil in the
region. Over 70% of aluminium foil used
in India is for packaging applications. The
Foil is a continuous web of aluminium metal
rolled to thickness ranging from 0.005 mm
to a maximum of 0.15 mm. Foil is available
in many forms, Le., hard, soft (annealed),

CALCIUM SILICATE

Calcium silicate (often referred to by its
shortened trade name Cal-Sil or Calsil) is
the chemical compound Ca2SiO4, also
known as calcium orthosil icate and
sometimes formulated 2CaO.SiO2. It is
one of a group of compounds obtained
by reacting calcium oxide and silica in
various ratios e.g. 3CaO•SiO2, Ca3SiO5;
2CaO•Si O2, Ca2Si O4; 3CaO•2Si O2,

Calcium silicate is a white free-flowing
powder derived from li mestone and
