Introduction

As a requirement for the assignment for the course Special Event Production (DEM241),
I have created an informative poster for a special event.

A special event is a unique moment in time celebrated with ceremony and ritual to satisfy
specific needs (Goldblatt, 1990). It is also a one-time or infrequently occurring event outside
normal programs or activities of the sponsoring or organizing body (Getz, 1997). It is generally a
gathering of human beings, lasting from a few hours to a few days, designed to celebrate, honor,
discuss, sell, teach, or learn about, encourage, observe, or influence human endeavors
(Matthews, 2008). There are a few categories of special events, namely meetings and
conferences, expositions and trade shows, and celebrations, ceremonies and spectacles, which
can be further broken down into public events such as parades, festivals and concerts, and private
events such as corporate dinners, weddings and birthday parties.

For my assignment, I have chosen to create an informative poster for a concert, which is
a public special event. I have linked this event to charity where the theme of this concert would
be “Music For A Cause”. The fundraising concert is aimed to help IDEAS Autism Centre which is
based in Rawang, Selangor to provide early interventive care and education for autistic children
between the age of 3 to 9 from low-income households. This is to ease these special children’s
transition and assimilation into mainstream primary schools nationwide.

The concert would be held by The Soundtrack Production at Stadium Merdeka, Kuala
Lumpur on the 25th of January, 2019. Price of tickets and time of entry are stated very clearly in
the poster. The venue is chosen because it is strategically located and well-known among both
locals and foreigners. Stadium Merdeka can also host up to 40,000 people, and is suffice for a
big event featuring the most popular artists, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande and Eminem. These big
names would no doubt generate a lot of interest among the public to take part and attend this
fundraising concert, hence also contributing to a good cause.

Last but not least, the official sponsors of the concert are being included in the poster to
display their support of the cause to provide the necessary care and education for autistic children
in Malaysia, which would also boost their company’s image among the public.

Conclusion

As a conclusion, I have learned a lot about the important elements and contents to be
taken into consideration when creating an informative poster for a special event. I have also
learned more about the various types of special events. A poster created for a special event must
serve its purpose, that is not only to inform the audience or the public of the details of the event,
but also to engage and gain their interest in participating. Sponsorship must be acknowledged
and displayed properly in the poster. I hope that with this new knowledge, I can fine tune and
apply my skills in the work field later to produce work that is productive, creative and innovative.
