A competency structure for a unit of learning in Architectural Drawing & Design I.

Hand Sketch Residential Concepts - Following completion of this Unit of Learning a student
should be able to create a hand sketched conceptual design model for a home defined by a
given set of size, use, and style parameters.

1. Create a scaled hand sketch of a Floor Plan for a home that fits the parameters given.
a. Demonstrate how to choose and use proper scale in a floorplan sketch.
b. Sketch lightly at first and darken lines in final rough sketch.
c. Correctly show and size all window and door openings.
d. Neatly annotate the sketch
i. Student name
ii. Description of project
iii. Scale of sketch
iv. Areas labeled as necessary
v. Total square footage given
vi. Footprint dimensions shown
e. Functional room/area sizes used in the plan
f. Secondary spaces provided in the layout (closets, hallways, chases, etc.)

2. Based on the rough floor plan create a Front Elevation to sketch scale
a. Show correct wall height
b. Illustrate roof lines
c. Wall and door openings are correctly sized
d. Wall and door openings lend to aesthetic appeal of the concept
e. Modify floor plan to facilitate improvement in the front elevation appeal
f. Add rough landscape and hardscape elements to sketch
i. Bushes
ii. Trees
iii. Driveway & sidewalk
g. Neatly add necessary annotations to elevation sketch
