Sub: Provision of HandRailing in small Passenger Lifts

As few members have been inquiring why handrails are

provided on all 3 sides of small elevators.
The following information is being provided for guidance:

Small Passenger elevators in our building are 1973 built.

However they are prone to ‘Mechanical jerks’ due to old AC Motors
and for Safety M/S Otis provides mandatory handrails on all 3 sides in
the cages (whenever new cages are ordered) complying with new
ADA Standards 2010, mounted 31 inches to 33 inches above elevator
floor.
This is a provision towards Safety for elderly people, unless the
client does not require same.

There has to be a gap of atleast 1.5 inches between handrail and

the wall ( Section 11B – 407.4.9).
