Use the rules for simplifying polynomials to answer the following:

1. Simplify the polynomial

2. The polynomial x 2  7 x  15 models the profit a company makes on selling an item at a price x. A second
item sold at the same price brings in a profit of 3x 2  4 x  50 . Write a polynomial that expresses the total profit
from the sale of both items.

3. The measures of two sides of a triangle are given. If P is the perimeter, and P  18 x  9 y , find the measure
of the third side.
4. Jena has a triangular garden with a perimeter that can be represented by 15 g 2  9 g  8 . The sum of two sides
of the garden is represented by 6 g 2  6 g  3 . Which expression represents the length of the third side?

5. The polynomial s 3  90 s 2  150s  800 models the profit a company makes on selling an item at a price s. A
second item sold at the same price brings in a profit of s 3  40 s 2  50s  150 . Write a polynomial that
expresses the total profit from the sale of both items.
6. The measures of two sides of a triangle are given. If P is the perimeter, and P  12 x  8 y , find the measure
of the third side.

4x + 2y 3x + 2y

7. Jena has a triangular garden with a perimeter that can be represented by 25r 2  9r  14 . The sum of two
sides of the garden is represented by 10r 2  12r  9 . Which expression represents the length of the third side?
