On “Complete Destruction” and “Desolated Field”

William Carlos Williams was a modernist poet born on 17 September 1883 in

Rutherford, New Jersey. He began to work as a student at Horace Mann High School. It was

a significant moment that he decided to grow up as a doctor and writer. He focused heavily

on studying and doing things he loved at the same time, so he could graduate with a doctorate

from the University of Pennsylvania, where he met a critical friend who would change. His

life is Ezra Pound. By the way, his poetry will focus on the importance of daily life. That

ordinary people can understand easily. The poem “Complete Destruction” and “The

Desolated Field” William Carlos Williams uses the literary device “free - verse writing style”

and “Imagery” to make both poems reveal the theme of desperation through disappointment.

The uses of free - verse writing style of this two poem have created the tone of detachment

and disappointment to illustrate the desolate hope.

In the poem “Complete Destruction” William Carlos Williams uses the literary

device “free - verse writing style” and “Imagery” to create the tone of detached to reveal the

theme of revealing the theme of desperation through disappointment like the poem “The

Desolated Field.” For example, in stanza two line 2 to 4 stated that “Those fleas that escaped”

and “died by the cold.” deliver a significant message to the reader that even though you may
escape destruction, but at some point, you still somehow have to dissolve, and death is

unescaped. In the first stanza of the poem in line 1 and 2 “ It was an icy day. We buried the

cat.” make the people realized the uncertainty of life Especially the death that will happen in

the future. Help not to underestimate anything in life.

Moreover, the value of time and the rest of our own life. Each person who loses a beloved

may have a different expression of sadness regarding pattern. Just like the person in the poem

that cannot bring a cat back to life and a flea that can escape but tragically death by the cold.

Moreover, may happen back or forth at the same time. So dealing with the loss of the heart is

unfixable things. If we each need to confront. Just accept the situation. Explore the impact on

ourselves. Furthermore, take care of it appropriately so that we can get through the difficult

lifetime. However, the following quote “We buried the cat, then took her box and set fire to

it” is stated by the writer to remind the reader that death and separation is a common

occurrence of everything life. Everyone will face it. We should accept it. However, it is not

easy for everyone who will immediately recognize this. We should understand it and take our

destiny to found real happiness in life. Moreover, the tone of detached also creates a strong

feeling towards the reader.

Just like the poem “Complete Destruction.” In the poem “The Desolated Field”

William Carlos Williams uses the literary device “free - verse writing style” and “Imagery” to

create the tone of depressed to make the poem reveal the same theme of desperation through

disappointment. In the title of the poem, the word“Desolated” represents the emptiness,

depression, and loneliness of the life. The poem is representing the death of everything and

make the reader feel depressed as the disappointment of something. To clarify the word

“something” in the last sentence, it is the question that the author leaves to the reader to
clarify the meaning by themselves. The example that is supported by the theme of

desperation Thoreau disappointment was the content in stanza 1 line 1 to 2 “Vast and gray;

the sky is a simulacrum.” During the time that the people are desperate. It can be the most

challenging of all. To face it we need to admit that we are not the center of the universe at all.

So embrace that pain well. Taste the experience you have to endure. Failure is smart enough

to keep us from overthinking. It makes us reduce morale. Also, close the door to other

opportunities. Until the light of hope in our heart is flickering. In term of psychology,

understanding the desperation is a basic self-awareness. "The consequences are more painful.

What you do affects the people around us, thoughts, feelings, behavior, so the person we

should threat the best is our self. The most significant message in this poem is the word

“simulacrum” in stanza 1 line 2. However, the following quote from stanza 1 line 2 to 4.

William Carlos Williams stated “a simulacrum to all but him whose days are vast and gray,

and. In the tall, dried grasses” to remind the reader that sometimes people are too serious

about living. When people were feeling too much disappointed and working around with it

too much, the best thing they can do is to stop carry the world upon their shoulders and

recognize how they can take care of themselves. Moreover the uses of repetition of the “vast

and gray” in line 1 and 12 also create a strong feeling of sadness and depression.

In conclusion, William Carlos Williams uses the literary device “free - verse

writing style” and “Imagery” to the poem “Complete Destruction” and “The Desolated Field”

make both poems unveil the theme of desperation through disappointment. The uses of free -

verse writing style of this two poem have shaped the sharp tone of detachment and

disappointment to illustrate the dying-hope. In this two poem, the uses of the free-verse

writing style and Imagery are used to demonstrate to the reader about their every day of life.
Everyone has to encounter disappointment, Of course; no one will be able to fulfill

everything. Moreover, no one will be disappointed in everything. Therefore, learning and

understanding of disappointment are fundamental. After we passed through this time, it will

be a valuable lesson for us in the future.

Pastiche

The spirit, my poor soul

is having flown

from my heart, my mind

Life is full of grief and sadness

The heart, my feeling

is having gone

no sensation, no passion

Life is now tossed and shredded

Now, the journey has Completed

The dream is ended

maybe there’s a chance for me to carry on

Reflection

The poem that I was created and inspired by the theme of "desperation through

disappointment." It was inspired by the poem "Complete Destruction" and "Desolated Field"

that was written by William Carlos Williams. For the structure of the poem, I was using the

free- verse writing technique to express the feeling of the frustration and depression to the

reader. In stanza 1 line 4 "Life is full of grief and sadness." was stated to build the reader a

robust sad emotion towards my poem and make them realized that nothing in this world is

perfect and perfection is not real. However, the pursuit of perfection will take us beyond the

way. Also, the point is that imperfection is beautiful and essential. Because when a man finds

his defect. He will surely be able to develop and find a way to do the next thing properly. In

stanza 3 line 1 to 3" maybe there’s a chance for me to carry on. The dream is ended." stated

to remind the reader to don't stop believing because the dreams will make men look forward.

It also makes everyone to become a better person as well. The purpose of my poem is to

motivate the people to carry on, not to be sad and don't give themselves a second chance. The

people who are worth living are those who do what they want to do, not what they want to

do. Even the most foolish people are still smart in some things.

Moreover, the smartest man can be stupid in some things and finally reminded them that

nothing is wasted time than stay in the past. For Williams Carlos Williams as my mentor. His

poem inspired mine by the way he uses his outstanding, unique technique to make the poem

meaningful and unique for the reader. For example, the way he uses his literary device in the

poem “Complete Destruction.” He uses “free - verse writing style” and “Imagery” to create

the strong tone of detached to reveal the theme of revealing the theme of desperation through

disappointment like the poem “The Desolated Field.” the tone of detached also make explain

to the reader that it is essential to fulfilling themselves. Furthermore, it also reminds the
reader to start to reconsider themselves and live their life as it should be in order to found real

happiness in life.
