The present continuous expresses actions in progress now. Use a form
of be and a present participle.

BE CAREFUL!
• Use singular verbs with non-count nouns.

Is there any butter? Yes, there is./ No, there is not. OR No, there isn’t
any.
4. The simple present tense and the present
continuous: usage
Remember:
Use the simple present tense with verbs have, want, need and like.
I like coffee. NOT I’m liking coffee.

Use the simple present tense to describe habitual actions and with frequency adverbs.

BE CAREFUL!
Use the present continuous for actions in progress right now. Don’t say:
We cook dinner
We’re making dinner now. now.
She’s studying English this year. I am cooking
dinner everyday.

Adjectives come before the nouns they describe.

Adjectives are never plural.

1. Can and can’t for ability
To talk about ability, use can or can’t and the base form of a verb.

Questions Short answers

Use can or can’t with well to indicate degree


of ability.
She can’t cook.
She can play the guitar, but she can’t play well.
2. Too + adjective
Too makes an adjective stronger. It usually gives it a negative
meaning.

I’m too busy. I can’t talk right now.

I had classes from 8 am to 8 pm and my dad asks me if I want to go


jogging. I answer… __________________.
3. Polite requests with Could you + base
form
Use Could you and the base form of a verb to make requests.
Person A forgot his jacket and is freezing, Person B has a jacket that she
he is not using because he’s not cold… ________________________.

Use please to make a request more polite.


Request a teacher to repeat a part of the entire explanation that has
already been explained 98765 times… ________________________.
