Line Dances

Grade/Subject: 1/2 Physical Education Unit: Dance Lesson Duration: 40 minutes

General Learning Outcomes:
Activity: Students will acquire skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities; dance,
games, types of gymnastics, individual activities and activities in an alternative environment; eg. aquatics and outdoor
pursuits.

Specific Learning Outcomes:

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. By the end of the lesson students will be able to demonstrate how to perform safe warm up activities.
2. By the end of the lesson students will be able to demonstrate basic dance steps put to music.
3. By the end of the lesson students will be able to describe how physical activity makes them feel.
4. By the end of the lesson students will be able to describe the changes that happens to their body during
physical activity.
ASSESSMENTS
Observations: Students are going to be observed Key Questions: How do you feel while participating in
how they are performing the warm up activities and physical activity? What changes occur to your body during

PROCEDURE
Introduction (5 mins.):
Hook/Attention Grabber: SAY: Today is going to be our last day of dance. On Friday, we are going to do some other
activities outside and then next week we are going to get into some gymnastics.
Assessment of Prior Knowledge: ASK: What are some things that we should keep in mind while participating in
dance?
Expectations for Learning and Behavior: SAY: Today I except you to be trying your best. I want you to be listening to
my instructions carefully. Today I am going to be watching for you to be performing the warm up activity safely and
watching your ability to perform the basic dance steps to the dances that we learn today.
Advance Organizer/Agenda: DO: Write the agenda on the board.
1. The Stretch Song -Warm-Up

3. Clap with Me

Transition to Body: SAY: Can I get squad one to line up on this line, squad two, etc.

Body (30 mins.):
Learning Activity #1: The Stretch Song (7 minutes)
DO: Show the students the stretches that we are going to be doing to the music cues before we start. Then play the
music for the students before we stretch together.
-hands up in the air
-legs straight out and touch your toes
-spread feet apart and put your hands up in the air
-twist to right-touch the ground and hold it
-arm circles to the front
-twist to the left-touch the ground and hold it
-arm circles to the back
-neck-moves like yes then like no
-I don’t know hands-move to the right side, move to the left side, right, left
-roll shoulders to back, front,
-bend forward right shoulder up and down, left shoulder up and down
-gallop to right, clap it high, left, clap low, right, clap high, left, clap low
-march it out
Assessments/Differentiation: Students are going to be assessed on their ability to follow the directional cues from the
song as well as how well they can follow me.
Transition to Learning Activity 2: ASK: How do you feel after we did the stretch song? Why do you think it is
important to warm up before participating in physical activity?

Learning Activity #2: Cha Cha Slide (10 minutes)


DO: Show the students the dance moves and then play the music for the students.
-bounce
-clap your hands
-slide left
-step back
-hop once
-left, right foot stomps
-cha cha
-turn
-slide right
-criss cross
-hands on your knees
-move down low and then come back up high
-reverse reverse (turn around backwards and back up)
-charlie brown (right foot forward, left foot backward hop back and forth on the legs)
Assessments/Differentiation: Students are going to be assessed on their ability to perform the dance moves that they
are being taught.
Transition to Learning Activity 3: SAY: Let’s move back to our nice straight lines before we get into our next dance.

Learning Activity #3: Clap with Me (7 minutes)


DO: Show the students the dance moves and then have them listen to the music before having them dance.
-bounce up and down at beginning
-clap to the right, left, right, left
-turn around with me with hands up high
-groove with me
-clap right, left, right, left
-shoulder
-drive the bus
-clap low, high, low, high
-spin on your back
-stand up
-clap then point at self
-stomp your feet
Assessments/Differentiation: Students are going to be assessed on their ability to perform the basic dance moves to the
beat of the music.
Transition to Learning Activity #4: SAY: Staying in our spot on the line we are going to learn another new dance
called the Elbow Dance.

Learning Activity #4: Elbow Dance (6 mins)
DO: Show the students the dance moves and then play the music for the students.
-move elbow to the right horizontal
-left elbow
-elbow dance up and down
-turn around and keep moving elbows up and down
-raise the roof
-hands on knees
-raise the roof
-hands on knees
-shake your shoulders
-row boat right side
-row boat left side
-roll arms low and high on right then left side
-elbows right and left side then freestyle
Assessments/Differentiation: Students are going to be visually observed on their ability to perform the dance moves.
Transition to Closure: SAY: Can I get everyone to come and sit in their squads in front of the white board.
Closure (5 mins.):
Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: ASK: How do you feel while participating in physical activity? What changes
occur to your body during physical activity?
Transition to Next Lesson: SAY: On Monday, we are going to be starting our gymnastics portion of our unit which I
know a lot of us are looking forward too.
