General Guidelines for PMP Exam Application

The PMP credential recognizes the competence of an individual to
perform in the role of a project manager, specifically
experiences in leading and directing projects. The PMP Role
Delineation states that candidates for the PMP credential meet all
of the following qualifications:
• Perform their duties under general supervision and are responsible for
all aspects of the project for the life of the project
• Lead and direct cross-functional teams to deliver projects within the
constraints of schedule, budget, and scope
• Demonstrate sufficient knowledge and experience to appropriately
apply a methodology to projects that have reasonably well-defined
requirements and deliverables

Each project should meet the following criteria:
1. Project entries represent professional and compensated work; a
project is defined as a temporary endeavor with a definite beginning
and end undertaken to create a unique project, product or service.
2. Tasks documented are project tasks, and not routine, operational
or administrative in nature.
3. Projects are documented individually, and multiple projects are
not documented as one.

Each project should meet the following criteria:
4. Hours of experience are reasonable for the timeframe of the
project.
5. Project titles reflect the true project title, and not the candidate’s
role or function
6. Deliverables are documented clearly, and in each process area
claimed for hours.

Scenario 1: One Year Project (12 months)
Scenario 2: Within one year (12 months), total 3 projects run concurrently
The maximum (or reasonable) PM hours per year for both Scenario 1 &
Scenario 2 is within 2,000 to 2,300 hours
Description Example
Average Hours Per month: 22 days * 8 Hours = 176 hours per month
Typically between 20-22 Per Year = 2,112 hours
working days

Note: The above calculation applies for project(s) that is less than one year or >
one year
Things to Watch Out

1. Project description: commonly misunderstood as “words” –
should be within 300-550 characters including spacing
2. Perfect start/end date: when one project ends, the next
project starts immediately the next month
– Project 1 start/end date: Jan 2015 to Sept 2015
– Project 2 start/end date: May 2014 to Dec 2014
– Project 3 start/end date: Jan 2014 to Apr 2014
3. Acronym: avoid acronym understood only within your
organization and not commonly used acronym. Acronym in the
PMBOK Guide is commonly used so it is good to use.

Things to Watch Out

4. Unreasonable Project Hours for:
– A single project for the timeframe of the project
– Overlapped projects for the timeframe for these projects
5. PM hours for Process Groups (I-P-E-MC-C) and PM
Tasks
– Ensure PM hours for each process group are
reasonable
– Ensure PM hours for each process group are
supported with PM tasks and vice versa. Example:
• Initiating hours of 20 hours supported with PM tasks such as:
