Learn JLPT N3 Grammar: あまりに

(amari ni)

Meaning: too…; so much… that; too much; excessively

あ ま り に and あ ま り both mean so much… that , however the

placement is different. あまりに is placed before verbs, adjectives and
Nouns, not after.

Formation:

あまり/あまりに/あまりにも + Verb
あまり/あまりに/あまりにも + Adverb
あまり/あまりに/あまりにも + Adjective
あまりの + Noun

Example sentences:

私たちは結婚式当日、あまりに忙しくて何の感慨も抱かなかった。
On our wedding day, we were too busy for any emotional thoughts.
watashitachi wa kekkonshiki toujitsu, amari ni isogashikute nan no
kangai mo idakanakatta.

この農場主によると、不法入国者や麻薬密売人はあまりに簡単に国境を越え
ることができるのです。
According to this farmer, illegal immigrants and drug traffickers can
cross the border far too easily.
kono noujoushu ni yoru to, fuhou nyuukokusha ya mayaku mitsubainin
wa amari ni kantan ni kokkyou o koeru koto ga dekiru no desu.

そんなわけで、そこにはあまり長くいなかったな。旅行する人たちがあまり
にうらやましく思えた。
And so I didn t stay there for very long. I was too jealous of everybody
traveling.
sonna wake de, soko ni wa amari nagaku inakatta na. ryokou suru
hitotachi ga amari ni urayamashiku omoeta.

ケンイチは口をポカンと開け、また閉じた。その驚きの表情があまり滑稽だ

Ken ichi opened his mouth and shut it again. His look of surprise was

When we reached the bottom it was so chill that we halted and got out
coats and mufflers.

mawari to amari ni mo kotonatte iru koto ga dore hodo kodoku na
mono ka wa, sassuru ni amari aru.

ピザがあまりにおいしそうだったので、諦めて一切れ食べました。
The pizza looked so good so I gave in and had a piece.
piza ga amari ni oishisou datta node, akiramete hitokire tabemashita.

ポットそのものはあまりに広すぎて暖房は効かない。
The pod itself is far too voluminous to be heated.
potto sono mono wa amari ni hirosugite danbou wa kikanai.

あまり安全というわけにはいかないでしょうね。
It s not too safe, I should say.
amari anzen to iu wake ni wa ikanai deshou ne.

よりも is usually used with 方が (hou ga).

Example sentences:

も、本当に喜ばしいことだと思っているんです。
I m also really pleased she s a serious politician who puts politics
before personal advancement or ego.
kanojo ga kojinteki na shusse ya puraido yorimo, seiji o yuusen suru
majime na seijika na no mo, hontou ni yorokobashii koto da to omotte
irun desu.

自国の首都よりもヨーロッパを訪れる者のほうがはるかに多いようだ。
It appears many more of you have visited Europe than have visited
your own capital.
jikoku no shuto yorimo yooroppa o otozureru mono no hou ga haruka
ni ooi you da.

明仁は権力よりも周囲の人を守ることを選びました。
Rather than power, Akihito chose to protect the people around him.
akihito wa kenryoku yorimo shuui no hito o mamoru koto o
erabimashita.

彼らが愉快に歌っていた。歌うほうが、話すよりもやさしく自然であるかの

koto desu, sukunakutomo watashitachi no futatsu no kuni de wa. hoka
no ooku no kuni de wa, mada hijou ni fubyoudou desu.

なることは立証された事実だ。
It is a proven fact that human intuition is a more accurate detector of

sekaichuu no donna denshi souchi yorimo, ningen no chokkan no hou
ga kiken no seikaku na tanchiki ni naru koto wa risshou sareta jijitsu
da.

The cohesion of a team is more important than personal freedom.
kojin no jiyuu yorimo, chiimu no danketsu ga daiji da.

watashi wa tetsu yorimo sara ni tsuyoku, sara ni tsumetai te de munzu
to tsukamareta.

時間は、思っているよりもずっと早く過ぎるものだ。
Time passes much more quickly than you realize.
jikan wa, omotte iru yorimo zutto hayaku sugiru mono da.
