Sweet Sixteen

Chapter one: The Letter

In this chapter, Aliya introduces herself, her family and her experience while growing up, especially her
sixteenth birthday. When she turns 14, she reads a book titled “Sweet Sixteen” that makes her feel she
is no longer a child at 16 but a young adult. On her 16th birthday, she expects herself to feel different but
she doesn’t.

While Aliya is worried about her father’s well-being because the principal doesn’t approach her excitedly
and present her a gift from her father as usual, Aliya remembers how Bobo (Tokunbo Alabi) gives her a
teddy bear with “I love you” written on its tummy and the advice she receives from her father. But Bobo
travels to Ireland before they resume from holiday.

On getting to the principal’s office, she realises that her father is in good health and receives a gift from
a father. The gift is a beautifully wrapped box that contains a digital camera and a letter with an
inscription: “Letter to My Daughter”, a 16-pages letter that dedicates a page to each year of Aliya’s life.
