* Please TYPE (including comments) DIRECTLY onto this form. athe PROFESSIONAL SEMESTER THREE: Final Report Teacher Mentor: Martin Schot | Inter Teacher: Megan Bos ‘Teacher Mentor Comments: ‘Megan has been a great colleague and has been invaluable in getting the Inquiry program started in the year 8/9 (grade 7/8) ‘lass. Her insight and ideas have shaped this into a successful program. Megan designed the unit plans forthe fist 2 units in the inquiry course (Indigenous uses of medicinal plants and urban planning), integrating strands from the New Zealand (Curriculum atthe level required fortis class. She regularly took the iitatve to discuss changes to the plans in order to respond to the needs and interest ofthe students, [Megan showed great creativity and capably in gathering and designing resources and using these in the classroom. The students and thei parents have given vary positive feedback on Magan’s teaching and specitcaly mention the gamification and integration of different fields (e.g. science and social studies) inta the projects the students have worked on. | have observed the strategies used by her in the classroom and have leamed alot from her in this area. The activites are designed to engage, reward and create positive competion, while not distracting from the learning process. Megan is observing the students for signs of disengagement and encourages them to participate through giving them responsibilities in their groups or setting goals and deadlines to be achieved. Struggling students in class are assisted personally and a student with special needs was assisted wih the help ofa teacher aide, Megan manages the class well and discourages bad behaviour with points subtracted from the team, or using quiet 10, keeping record of how the class is doing on the white board. Students who at times fal to complete their homework or decide ltomisbehave in class, are spoken to and Megan uses the schoofs discipline system of lines, sheets and detentions to follow {through on the discipine. Megan takes the ime to familiarise herself with the content to be covered in cass. She asks for clarification if uncertain oF [does not feel confident about any of the content. She has successfully led @ microscopy practical, without a technician present [during the lesson, even though she was not very skilled in microscopy herset. Megan has used different assessment styles during the past one and a half terms. She informally assesses the students by listening in to their conversations during group work and asking questions, and gives feedback on the quests and tasks completed. Megan has used formal tests, quizzes (both on paper and digitally) and assignments for formative and summative ‘assessments. She ties to make the tasks as relevant and realistic as possible (e.9. asking students to write @ grant proposal Megan hes been a pleasant addition tothe staff, participating in staff meetings and independently discussing the progress and behaviour oftheir child(ren) during the school's annual parent - teacher interviews. She has shown great professionalism in discussing sensitive issues and dealing with personal and confidential informatio. She initiates meetings to discuss [progression ofthe unt or issues that have come up during the lessons. She communicates clearly and caries any apparent ‘misunderstandings. Mogan has fostered positve relationships with parents, colleagues and students, showing thet she cares forthe students individually (e.g. greting them each by their name at the end of most days). She takes tme to listen to ther ife stories and struggles they may have and is gentle and deals with them ina pleasant and cheerful manner. She has buit a strong posite rapport with all who have gotten to know her and will be missed grealy. I wish her all the best and | am confident thatthe students she will teach in the future will be privileged with her qualities as a teacher they will remember for ite.
