Brief Psychotic disorder

Epidemiology
• MC age group: 20 – 30 y/o
• MC gender: F > M

Causes
• Acute traumatic life event, ex: accident, severe psychological trauma, loss beloved one
• Family history of mental illness: Mood disorder, Schizophrenia
• History of personality disorder: Borderline, histrionic, paranoid, schizotypal

DSM 5 Criteria

Onset of symptoms Following symptoms must all present from Day 1 up to 1 Month of illness &
return to premorbid function after 1 month

Triggering factor • ± Stressful life event or

Subclassification 1. Brief psychotic disorder + marked stressor (if there is stressful life event)
2. Brief psychotic disorder without marked stressor
3. Brief psychotic disorder + postpartum onset
Must rule out • Schizoaffective disorder
• Schizophrenia
• Mood disorder with psychotic feature
• Substance abuse or medical condition

Non-Pharmacological Supportive psychotherapy
Pharmacological Antipsychotic (Low dose) Treat psychotic symptoms
Benzodiazepine (Low dose) Treat sleep problem (insomnia)
