Homework #8: SS Elastic plate buckling January 16th, 2019

Group work

1.- You are asked to compare critical buckling stress calculated with the Finite Element
method, with those obtained applying DNV formulation and theoretical formulations
deduced in class. The deck plates to be analyzed correspond to those of a tanker
(longitudinally framed) and a fishing vessel (transversely framed); detailed plans are
available in the instructor office. For the DNV formulation, apply section 12 for Buckling
control in Rules for ships with length less than 100 m, 2015.

2.- Approximate the critical buckling stress of a rectangular plate, with the y-edges (parallel
to y-axes) as simply supported, and the x-edges as clamped. Propose and plot a function to
approximate the deflection. Then integrating the Strain energy and External work, estimate
buckling critical stress of the plate, assuming that the uniformly distributed load is applied
in the x-direction. Compare your results with the SS case analyzed in class for aspect ratios
a/b between 0.25 and 1.0 (Transverse framing system).

To be submitted Friday January 25th.
