The story opens with prologue(2001) Laila is now 38 and she remembers the incident which
was faced by her from nov 1971 to dec 1971. She lives in Sabzbagh with her parents and a
grandmother who is living in kalanpur. Rani lives in Sardar Begum’s house with her nani Kaneez.
Rani used to visit her whenever she went to kalanpur. Rani finds herself in love with a boy and
becomes pregnant. She does not tell to anyone and makes Laila her confidential partner. The
story has an eye catching folk lore of Heer Ranjha- Laila wants to feel distinguish and her
inclination towards become beautiful sends her into doomed. Laila makes a number of visits to
Rani. Sardar begum is not in the side to give anyone importance, and army is one of it. Mashook
beats Fatima badly and an alcoholic. He has been sacked from his job by khursheed. Army is
portrayed in the novel as a low class power which is in the state of emerging. Mashook kills Rani
by taking her into a hut by deceit. Tariq wants to register his FIR but Sardar Begum refuses to do
so. Mashook gets release from jail and lives in exile. Laila throughout her life curses her. Tariq
blames Fareeda for her irresponsibility.
