 Derek Sanderson Jeter was born on June 26, 1974, in Pequannock, New Jersey.
 His parents are named Dorothy and Charles Jeter. His mother Dorothy is an
accountant while his father Charles is a substance-abuse counselor.
 At the age of four, his family moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan so his father could
pursue a Ph.D. in psychology at Western Michigan University.
 Jeter got into playing baseball at the age of five.
 Jeter played baseball and basketball in high school.
 He was determined to become a major league baseball player throughout his high
school career.
 In Jeter’s final two years of high school baseball, he hit over .500 striking out only
once his senior year.
 He won many national awards, including the 1992 Gatorade High School Athlete of
the Year, and the USA Today’s High School Player of the Year.
 Jeter was taken sixth overall in the June of 1992 draft by the New York Yankees.
 Jeter started at the minor league class A Tampa Yankees and did very poorly. He had
made 21 errors in 58 games in his first season in the minors.
 Over the next couple years, Jeter improved and he ended up being Most Outstanding
Prospect in 1993, and Minor League Player of the Year in 1994.
 Jeter made his big league debut on May 29, 1995.
 The following year in his first full season in the big leagues, he batted .314 with 10
homeruns and 78 RBI’s.
 He helped the Yankees win the World Series against the Atlanta Braves, and went on
to win the 1996 American League Rookie of the Year Award.
 Jeter developed into one of baseball’s top all around players and one of the stars on
a perennially dominant Yankees team.
 Jeter earned his first of 14 All-Star selections in 1998, a season that ended with the
first of three straight world series championships for the Yankees.
 Jeter led the majors in hits, and he tallied career highs in home runs and RBIs in
1999.
 In 2000, he became the first player to be named the All-Star Game and World Series
MVP in the same season.
 Jeter won many awards throughout his career.
 He won the AL Gold Glove award for the best fielding shortstop in the American
League.
 He won the Hank Aaron Award for best overall hitter in the American League, and he
also won the Silver Slugger award for best offensive shortstop.
 On July 9th, 2011, Jeter registered his 3,000th career hit with a homerun, becoming
just the 28th player to reach that mark.
 Jeter would end up retiring from the league in September of 2014.
 Jeter finished his career with 3,464 hits, which is sixth all time in major league
history.
 Derek Jeter played all 19 seasons in the league with the New York Yankees.
 He won the World Series five times.
 Jeter got his number 2 retired by the Yankees in 2017.
 He is still in the baseball business today, as he has part ownership of the Miami
Marlins major league team.
