Derek Sanderson Jeter was born on June 26, 1974, in Pequannock, New Jersey.
His parents are named Dorothy and Charles Jeter. His mother Dorothy is an
accountant while his father Charles is a substance-abuse counselor.
At the age of four, his family moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan so his father could
pursue a Ph.D. in psychology at Western Michigan University.
Jeter got into playing baseball at the age of five.
Jeter played baseball and basketball in high school.
He was determined to become a major league baseball player throughout his high
school career.
In Jeter’s final two years of high school baseball, he hit over .500 striking out only
once his senior year.
He won many national awards, including the 1992 Gatorade High School Athlete of
the Year, and the USA Today’s High School Player of the Year.
Jeter was taken sixth overall in the June of 1992 draft by the New York Yankees.
Jeter started at the minor league class A Tampa Yankees and did very poorly. He had
made 21 errors in 58 games in his first season in the minors.
Over the next couple years, Jeter improved and he ended up being Most Outstanding
Prospect in 1993, and Minor League Player of the Year in 1994.
Jeter made his big league debut on May 29, 1995.
The following year in his first full season in the big leagues, he batted .314 with 10
homeruns and 78 RBI’s.
He helped the Yankees win the World Series against the Atlanta Braves, and went on
to win the 1996 American League Rookie of the Year Award.
Jeter developed into one of baseball’s top all around players and one of the stars on
a perennially dominant Yankees team.
Jeter earned his first of 14 All-Star selections in 1998, a season that ended with the
first of three straight world series championships for the Yankees.
Jeter led the majors in hits, and he tallied career highs in home runs and RBIs in
1999.
In 2000, he became the first player to be named the All-Star Game and World Series
MVP in the same season.
Jeter won many awards throughout his career.
He won the AL Gold Glove award for the best fielding shortstop in the American
League.
He won the Hank Aaron Award for best overall hitter in the American League, and he
also won the Silver Slugger award for best offensive shortstop.
On July 9th, 2011, Jeter registered his 3,000th career hit with a homerun, becoming
just the 28th player to reach that mark.
Jeter would end up retiring from the league in September of 2014.
Jeter finished his career with 3,464 hits, which is sixth all time in major league
history.
Derek Jeter played all 19 seasons in the league with the New York Yankees.
He won the World Series five times.
Jeter got his number 2 retired by the Yankees in 2017.
He is still in the baseball business today, as he has part ownership of the Miami
Marlins major league team.
