Michael Bertiaux's work


first came to more widespread attention with the
inclusion of an account of aspects of his work in
K e n n e t h G r a n t ' s Cults of the Shadow (Frederick Muller
Ltd., London, 197S). Since then there has been
i n c r e a s i n g i n t e r e s t in B e r t i a u x ' s w o r k , culminating in
t h e r e c e n t r e p u b l i c a t i o n o f h i s Voudon Gnostic Workbook.
M a n y find B e r t i a u x ' s w o r k e n t h r a l l i n g , b u t t o s o m e its
sprawling immensity makes an entry into the work
difficult. It is o f g r e a t value therefore to have the
guidance of someone who has had many years of
e x p e r i e n c e in w o r k i n g with Michael Bcrtiaux and in
e x p l o r i n g his vast b o d y of w o r k . H a v i n g w o r k e d with
this m a t e r i a l , David Beth has a t t u n e d himself to the
c u r r e n t w h i c h p o w e r s B e r t i a u x ' s w o r k , a n d is t h u s w e l l
qualified.

p r o v i d e an initiated c o m m e n t a r y o n parts of t h e gnosis
o f M i c h a e l B e r t i a u x ' s Voudon Gnostic Workbook (VGW). I
wanted to offer insights into my own personal
u n d e r s t a n d i n g a n d a d a p t i o n of t h e Black Snake current
h o p i n g t h a t it w o u l d e n a b l e s t u d e n t s o f E s o t e r i c V o u d o n
and other related traditions t o travel deeper into these
fascinating magical and gnostic worlds. It was the
practicing s o r c e r e r a n d gnostic that t h e original essay
was intended f o r a n d i t is t h e s a m e type of occult
e x p l o r e r s I w a n t t o r e a c h w i t h this b o o k .
