Denice, 55, larger woman with twinkling eyes, wiry gray hair,
She has a soft, warm look to her.
DENICE
Well Ms. Jay, why don't we start with
why you came in today?
JAY
My friends are worried about me.
DENICE
And why is that?

CAR- NIGHT 6
Jay has just parked at her dorm, she rummages in her bag
about to get out of the car. A song plays on the radio.
SONG ON RADIO
Meet me in the hotel lobby...
She looks down at her car radio. In the same glitchy style as
the Thought Text Scroll the station numbers reconstruct and
translate into:

Jay restarts her car and peels out. She drives through
winding neighborhood streets passing a water tower with an
Eagle mascot painted on it.

Jay watches the car speed away and walks slowly out into the

There is a loud revving sound down the street where the car
had gone. Jay looks up and the white car drives past her
going the opposite direction. Her phone beeps

The flashlight turns off and she looks down one last time,
giving up on finding what ever it was, and dashes to her car.

Jay starts her car tossing her phone aside. And follows after

Denice laughs.

Do you have any family near by?
JAY
Not terribly far? Four hours north
DENICE
hm. How about close friends?
JAY
Yeah, I got a few good ones.

of being tired all the time
JAY
I'm sorry man, that sucks. Whats been
going on?
MARTIN
Just school I guess, I'm failing
capstone. And when I mentioned it in
group therapy they weren't really
helpful.
JAY
If you want we could do homework
together? Keep each other company?
MARTIN
That sounds nice. How are you doing?
JAY
I'm okay... I- There's a lot
happening. But I'm fine, I'm good. I'm
fine.
MARTIN
Whats up?
JAY
I'm good never mind
MARTIN
Are you okay?

like I'm popping in an out of reality

but she doesn't blink and she doesn't look at Martin.
JAY
-I.. don't know whats happening. I'm
sorry I never mind. I didn't mean to
hijack your burritos trip. I'm sorry
MARTIN
Hey, you're okay. It's okay.
MARTIN
you (beat) you don't have to tell me
anything you don't want to and- tell
me if I'm overstepping but (beat) have
you thought about maybe going to CAPS?
JAY
CAPS?
MARTIN
It's the counseling program on campus
its were I go for group, but I've been
thinking I might want to sign up for
individual again. I could go with you
to sign up if that would make it
easier.
JAY
I don't think I (beat) yeah... Yeah
that sounds like a good idea.

Jay sees the car she had followed before on that night at the
park. The car flashes their lights 4 times. Numbers and

want to know what's happening? They need help! They need your
help! They Need YOUR HELP!
JAY
No. Shut up! SHUT UP!
JAY

Thought Text:
That was the only thing that is real. THIS isn't real. Go
Back. NO, go back. Loosing them! GO BACK! NO
Jay pushes her laptop aside. She stretches and closes her
eyes. The second her eyes close everything goes gray. We see
what she sees. She sees the gray room. The Curl Haired Boy
looks beaten and bruised he is being held up by to people in
uniform
Jay gasps and stumbles back, opening her eyes. In her thought
text we see her drawing of the Curly haired boy and the
memory of "don't forget me..."

Jay's eyes are still tearing up as Denice leads her down the

And she finally moves. Thought text 'boots up':

Martin: Hey, where'd you go last night? Also I didn't see you
in class today, you okay?
Jay looks up, doesn't know what to say. Thought text slowly

She reopens her eyes with a start. She looks around her dorm
room everything is normal. She blinks and the screen flashes
to the dark silhouette of the Grey Room. One of the people is
closer and walking quickly towards Jay/the camera.
They've seen you, They know you know now. They saw you open

and I snapped out of it- and felt
stupid
DENICE
How did you feel?
JAY
I don't know- when?
DENICE
at any point.
JAY
I felt... numb. I was nervous but I-
never mind. I was embarrassed after
but I still almost think I was right.
Like, they realized I knew what was
going on and stopped.
DENICE
(prompting) This sounds very
frightening
JAY
It's exhausting. Like I have half of
me here and the other half sees whats
happening over there. And everything I
do has to line up with both.
31/61
1/25/2019 Script Final Draft- Yeet
31.
DENICE
What do you mean
JAY
Like if I want to buy apples like a
normal person I would go to the store
and buy them but if the other half of
me knows they're poison- I won't. But
it works the other way too sometimes I
tip farther into this reality I ignore
what I know is happening over there.
And everything I say and do has to be
safe here and there- And I can't tell
you things sometimes because it'll put
people over there in danger- I'm never
sure which place is real. Here or
there... so I've just been trying to
balance both without getting anyone
hurt. (beat)
DENICE
Where is this other half of you? What
is this other reality?
JAY
I'm... trapped in a Gray Room, and
everything I see here is fake. I'm
locked into a chair and there are
needles, and they cut into me. And
there are people who can hack into
this simulation- they're trying to get
me out. They want me to wake up

Electricians to reach their discarded gels. One gets kicked
into a crevice. She reaches down, her sleeve gets in the way.
She rolls it up not even thinking, she reveals the 18 X's cut
into her arm in the shape of Orion.
She pulls out the gel, and realized Martin has seen the cuts.
She quickly rolls down her sleeve and hurries off.

She hops off the ladder holding the back of her neck looking
around. There is still nothing around her. She flinches
again, ans again she continues to jerk away swatting at
nothing, becoming more frantic.

The image we see shifts rapidly between the Jay here, and the

JAY
(whispering as the universe) no. stop.
No more.
APARTMENT INTERIOR 70
JAY V.O
So I'm sitting there writing my
masterpiece when I see a hunched over
figure on the stairs hiding behind the
banister.
JAY V.O
And I blink and it's gone. So I'm
like-
JAY V.O
"weird"

JAY V.O
And went back to my Oscar winner. Its
at this point I assume the universe is
just like-
JAY
(as universe) no. no. no. I ain't
having this.
APARTMENT INTERIOR 72
JAY V.O
So I look up again and this time I see
a head popping up over the banister
and I look in the mirror, and I see
the rest of it crouching on the
stairs.
JAY V.O
And I was like "fuck". So I get up and
what do I do? Go out the front door
that's right in front of me? "Nah dog,
I'm a white person in a horror movie,
I'm going upstairs"
Young Jay mouths the words and goes up stairs, into her room.
JAY V.O
Now, like I said-
JAY
-It's audition season
JAY V.O
and I need head-shots so I'm dolling

Young Jay see's it in the mirror and turns around. Her mouth
forming a perfect silent film scream.
JAY V.O
It was standing in the door way
hunched. It was so tall it had to tilt
its head to fit and the side of its
head still brushed the ceiling. (beat)
And finally I was like nah dog "I'm
out"
Jay rushes past grabbing shoes and a jacket and runs out the
door.
DENICE
(snorts) oh?
JAY
But wait there's more!
APARTMENT INTERIOR 76
Young Jay runs down the stairs and out the door.
JAY V.O
So I tear out of there and sit on the
stairs to put on my shoes and I hear
at the window
DENICE V.O
noo
JAY V.O
Tap. Tap tap tap tap. So I ran.
JAY V.O
It's at this point that a truck full
of hick went by

JAY
(with mock composure) And so in my
compromised state. I froze up (beat)
and tipped over. Like a fainting goat.
DENICE
Oh darling you make me laugh.
JAY
Thanks, you're probably the only one,
since my comedy career has been halted
by the universe.
JAY
Yeah, I guess I was going crazy...
makes for a good story though!
DENICE
No no, You're not crazy, your brain is
just firing off the wrong signals. I
hope you don't think you're crazy.You
are an intelligent, beautiful young
woman.
JAY
(joking) yeah I am pretty great.
DENICE
Don't.
DENICE
You are absolutely hilarious and I
love you to death, girly. But I need
you know- you are not crazy.
Internalizing that stigmatizing-
Thinking you are "batshit as you said
earlier" isn't going to help you,
alright. You've got schizophrenia-
you're not a crazy person.
JAY
Alright.

Jay wakes up, slowly. She sits up and the Curly Haired Boy's
body is at the food of her bed. Dead.
Jay, still expressionless here, pushes the body off her bed.
He falls to the ground next to two other bodies. A woman with
a short black pixie cut and a blond man with glasses (both
her age).
Jay lays down between the two bodies, The Curly Haired boy
near her feet. She cries, though we don't hear her. "Kill me
too, Kill me too, I'm so sorry"
Jay sits in the big chair pillow on her lap. She picks at the
fringe as she talks.
JAY
I wore blue socks to their funeral, I
haven't been able to get my self to
wear them since- it feels wrong to

DENICE
Funeral?
JAY
It was just me. I just sat in my room-
I wanted to say a few words or-
Jay's voice breaks, she mourns them, they are so very real to
her.
JAY
I couldn't even do that. I- don't know
their names. I- couldn't bury them- I
don't have anything to. I could't give
them a real funeral- I could gather
their friends or family because I'm
the only one who knows that they
exsis- and I cant even remember them
I- couldn't say their names, or take
comfort in memories of them. I can't
mourn them they took that away from
me.
DENICE
I can see that this is very real to
you-
JAY
(louder, Angry and guilty) He told me
not to forget him. He begged me not
to. And I did! I can't remember him. I
just have his face and I can't even-
DENICE
Jay I need you to calm-
JAY
I know them, I know I do. I can't
remember their names or anything about
them but I know I loved them. I love
them so much, and I miss them. I know
they were like family because I feel
like THIS. And they're dead because of
me! I didn't listen and it's my fault-
Jay's words give way to sobs as she talks. Three people are
dead, three people she loves are dead, because she didn't
listen.

DENICE
(Gently) Jay, Jay. Calm down
sweetheart, I need you to breath.
JAY
I can't remember them and now they're
dead because me,I can't do anything. I
can't even say a few words at a
funeral or tell them I remember them-
Because I don't I can't remember! They
took that from me.
DENICE
Who did?
JAY
I don't know! (beat) The man I saw,
the people in the Gray Room.
Jay hands shake and she tries to stop crying- her breath
hitches, she can't breathe smoothly. Tears run down her face,
this is not a controlled cry. This is real grief and guilt
that she can't shake.
JAY
I know your supposed to say they're
not real, but how can this hurt so
much, if they're not real?
LOUISE
Goodnight!
LEMON
G'night!
MARTIN
(to Louise) Be safe!
The door closes and Jay and Martin are left alone. Martin's
head is on Jay's lap. The TV thrums softly.

JAY

Jay pulls her laptop onto her lap closing down windows.
Martin sits down next to her and she moves the computer
clearing her lap for him. He doesn't lay down. She looks at
him and he leans in and so does she.

JAY

MARTIN
yeah! And the cousin didn't tell eye
patch guy anything so he hands over
the laptop to her and the second she
get it he shoots him and reads the
file right there in the living room
JAY
whaaaaat
MARTIN
And the second she finishes the cops
show up and she smashes the laptop and
surrenders
JAY
so she's in jail now?
MARTIN
I don't know that was the last
episode, and I don't know if they're
bringing it back
JAY
Daaaamn, we'll have to watch it
sometime.
MARTIN

They laugh and eat as the sun sets, Jay lays her head on
Martin's shoulder.
MARTIN
You know... I've always wanted to
make-out on a mountain
JAY
What a coincidence
MARTIN'S BEDROOM 87
Jay and Martin lay asleep in the bed, a laptop, paused on the
"Are you still watching?" screen.
JAY
(whispering) There's a man in your
room.
MARTIN
You're okay
Jay looks back, and there is no one there. She still looks
worried but turns back to Martin who's already fallen back
asleep. She watches him breath for a moment and closes her
eyes again. Trusting, and going back to sleep.

JAY
I just- I want you know that if it

(beat) If my having schizophrenia ever
becomes too much for you to handle,
just let me know okay? I don't want
you to keep dating me because you pity
me or anything.
MARTIN
I'm not gonna break up with you
because you're mentally ill. If I need
space I'll tell you, but I don't think
that's gonna happen. Don't worry about
that okay
JAY
Yeah- (beat) I just wanted to- ...
yeah. So whatchu working on?
MARTIN
Master electrician things for
Eurydice.
JAY
Yeah?
MARTIN
I'm figuring out how many addresses I
need for the moving head lights.
'Cause the solo washes we're using
take up like 26 addresses- and there
are 512 universes
MARTIN
so not too bad

Jay and Martin walk through a park, its evening and not many
people are here. They carry ice-cream from The Pallet
MARTIN

MARTIN
Just so many little things- I'm
overwhelmed and my dad's no fucking

JAY
Do you want to talk about it
MARTIN
I guess.
MARTIN
I'm failing half my classes, and its
partially because I've been at the
Anes at all hours of the night for
Eurydice, and since I'm the Master
Electrician for my production hours
I'm not getting payed so I'm behind on
bills,And my mom can't afford to help
anymore than she has-
JAY
I'm sorry
MARTIN
And I know my dad could afford to help
me he goes to Hawaii every few months-
he just won't or he'll have stings
attached- And he'll give me a lecture-
it's not like I haven't been working,
and I haven't spent money on anything
but bills and food.
JAY
Hey, you're gonna be okay. I can help,
I can buy you some groceries.
MARTIN
No, I can't make you do that
JAY
Try to stop me. Otherwise I'll just
have to come over and make you Alfredo
for every meal. You can't stop me, I'm
your dad now.

JAY
(beat) yeah I did. And I meant it.
(gently) But you don't have to say it
back it's probably early for that I
just-
MARTIN
I love you too.
Jay smiles and holds him close. She kisses him on the
forehead.
MARTIN

MARTIN
I've just been working at the

JAY
I don't want to lose you.
MARTIN
(confused) Don't worry, you won't.
Jay is watching Star Trek TNG on her laptop not really paying
attention. She is texting Martin, their messages appear in
place of Thought Text Scroll.
Martin: Good! I've got laundry 98% done and I'm about to put
pizza rolls in. I'll come over when I change over to the
