LESSON PLAN

Subject : chemistry

Topic : Electron Configuration (the principle of the aufbau, the rules of Hund,
and the Pauli ban)
Grade/ Semestr : XI/ I

Time Allocation : 1 x 50 minutes

I. Competence Standart
Understanding atomic structures to predict the periodic properties of elements,
molecular structures, and properties of compounds.

II. Basic Competence

Explain Bohr's atomic theory and quantum mechanics to determine electron
configurations.

III. Indicators
Using the aufbau principle, Hund's rules, and Pauli's prohibition principle to write
electron configuration.

IV. Learning Objectivies

a. After going through the learning process, students are expected to be able
to,Using the aufbau principle, Hund's rules, and Pauli's prohibition principle to
write electron configuration.
b. After going through the learning process, students are expected to be able to:
explain electron configurations, both the aufbau principle, the hund rule and the
pauli prohibition principle.

V. Teaching Materials
The arrangement of electrons in an atom is known as an electron configuration. For
being able to write electron configurations in an atom requires rules or rules. There is
three rules that must be fulfilled in writing electron configurations in an atom. The three
rules are as follows:

 the aufbau principle

Charging atomic orbitals by electrons starts from orbitals that have the lowest
energy level, then starts to higher energy orbitals.
 Pauli's Prohibition
states that an atom will not have two electrons at the price of the same four
quantum numbers.
 The Hund rule
states that parallel spin will fill first on orbitals that are energy level, then form
pairs with spin the opposite.
a. Electron ion configuration
For example the electron configuration of Ca2+ ions and F– ions
20Ca : 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2
When a Ca atom releases 2 electrons, Ca2+ ion occurs which has a number of protons of
20 and 20 - 2 electrons = 18
Electron ion configuration Ca2+ : 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6

9F : 1s2 2s2 2p5

If the F atom receives 1 electron, an F ion occurs which has a number of protons 9 and
an electron 9 + 1 = 10
Electron ion configuration F– : 1s2 2s2 2p6
b. Full and half full stability
Writing electron configurations must pay attention to atomic stability. According to
experiments, atoms will be more stable if the skin or subshell is filled with electrons full
or half full, especially d and f orbitals. Example:
Electron configuration:
24Cr : 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s1 3d5

Not : 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d4
