ENGINE COMPARTMENT
Complete and
Battery Carrier: Semi-gloss black with appropriate attaching parts. Hold down clamp
mounted correctly, groove fits in carrier, centering tab present. Mounting bolt and nut –
phosphate & oil. 65 through 5S328 have trunk mount battery with vented caps. 65 from
5S328 have standard front mounting as Mustang.
Quality of workmanship, condition and cleanliness
Battery: Autolite. Group 22 or 24 acceptable Div II.

Trunk Mount - must be Group 24 with standard or reverse posts. May have COBRA™
vent caps with rubber vent tubes routed to holes in trunk floor.
Battery Cables and Starter Cable: Routed in original position.

Front Mount - After 5S328 – standard red FoMoCo™ cables with correct Ford ™
stamped numbers and terminal cover.
Trunk Mount – Through 5S328 - positive cable is “00” welding cable routed under car.
Black trunk ground coiled.
Attached with rubber coated clips in the proper location and with correct hardware.
Starter and Ground Cable - Black FoMoCo™ with original mounting bracket. Terminal
end is tin dipped. Cables printed as original. No paper sleeves.
Starter Solenoid and Junction Block: Correct reddish brown (early) or black (later)
FoMoCo™ marked unit, mounted properly, with fine tread posts and thin nuts with
integrated star washers. Mounted on passenger side inner fender panel near the
battery and before shock tower.
Alternator: Mounted with proper hardware.

Alternator: Natural cast aluminum finish. May have no Autolite stamp. With radio
should have radio suppressor at alternator.
Fan, Pulley Nut and Lock Washer: Semi-gloss black or zinc dichromate fan and
pulley. Very late 65 may have blue pulley.
Alternator Spacer: Black anodized steel.

ENGINE COMPARTMENT

Starter: Mounted with proper hardware. Semi-gloss black (thin or no paint at engine
end) with ink-stamp. Natural starter post.
Air Cleaner and Filter: 14-inch open element air cleaner with chrome lid, zinc wing nut
and gold base. Correct zinc wing nut. Correct filter style and type for year and model.

PVC, Hose and Hardware: Original design and finishes, mounted in the correct
location with original hardware.
Engine Components to be Painted:

Same Color as Engine Block (Black): Intake manifold bolts, heads, thermostat
housing, bypass hose and clamps, water pump, timing cover, oil dipstick tube, oil
dipstick handle may be black or natural, all attaching hardware.
Heater Hose Elbow – painted fully or with overspray.
Semi-Gloss Black Components: Fan, fan pulley, crankshaft pulley, intake bolts,
harmonic balancer, alternator bracket and adjustment arm. Engine motor mount
brackets.
Engine Components to be Aluminum: Engine to frame mount brackets, bell housing,

accelerator linkage (zinc), distributor hold-down bracket, fan spacer, oil pressure sender
extension (proper square black oxide plated adapter).
Exhaust Manifolds: Proper design, painted black tri-Y headers with small head heat
treated bolts at heads.
Gaskets: white in color.
Quality of workmanship, condition and cleanliness of above 2 categories

ENGINE COMPARTMENT
Complete and
Engine Components to be Aluminum:

Intake Manifold: Aluminum Cobra - S1MS (very early may have no part number).
Gaskets – ends natural cork , side white paper.
Valve Covers: Aluminum, open letter Cobra valve covers. All use cadmium standard
grade 5 bolts with small thick flat washers and lock washers. Fins and lettering are
polished/machined.
Oil Pan: Aluminum Cobra - S1MS. Oil pan bolts, - uses Phillips head screws and hex
head bolts with star washers..
Valve Cover and Oil Pan Gaskets: Black coated cork. Valve covers may be coated top
and bottom surface only.
Carburetor: Proper type for year and engine. #3259 715 CFM Holley.
Distributor and Cap: Proper design and natural finish Non vacuum advance,
FoMoCo™ marked, natural aluminum finish with phosphate & oil clips. Correct for year
and model with correct lead mounted properly.
Cap: Black plastic with #1.
Coil: FoMoCo or Autolite with yellow ceramic top. Mounted in correct location with
correct markings.
Mounting Bracket: semi-gloss black or phosphate and oil.
Spark Plugs and Wires:

Wires: FoMoCo Black wires marked SX (steel core non-resistor) or Radio resistance
SX wire. Properly routed with correct attaching wire separators and in correct order.
Spark Plugs: Autolite. #BF32

Fuel Lines and Attaching Parts:
Rigid Lines: Original configuration and finish with proper attaching parts. All use unique
Shelby fuel line from pump to carburetor.
Flex Lines: Black with original factory markings and crimp style clamps, properly
crimped.

ENGINE COMPARTMENT
Complete and
Fuel Pump: Original button top upper body, zinc dichromate lower steel body, original
design and location, mounted with correct hardware Marked CARbureTer. Canister filter
at pump, white canister with red print, hex base canisters not allowed.

Oil Filter: Double crimped body, painted engine block color, mounted in original
location
Oil Pressure Line: Black cloth braided high pressure line with gold or silver ends.
Routed along valve cover with metal (AEROQUIP) tag.
Underside of Hood: 65 – mostly body color.Underside of Hood: 65 – mostly body color.
Hood Hinges and Springs: Phosphate and oil finish. Early production equipped
with semi-gloss black prop rod properly mounted (with zinc bolt catch) and no
hood springs. Later production used special smaller springs and no prop rod.
Export Brace, Monte Carlo Bar and Front Shock Brackets:

Export Brace: One piece painted semi-gloss black with firewall reinforcement welded
and sealed at cowl. Bolts at firewall are equally spaced, flathead standard no-vendor
mark cadmium plated or standard Ford.
Front Shock Upper Bracket: With welded-on washer reinforcement. Painted semi-
gloss black.
Monte Carlo Bar: Painted semi-gloss black. Mounted with phosphate and oil Ford
bolts.
Firewall and Inner Fender Panels: Painted semi-gloss black.
Fender and Inner Fender Bolts: Original color and style. Correct phosphate and oil
finish. Painted bolts not allowed. Star washers, disc washers or combination acceptable.
Firewall Sound Deadener (Sealant): At proper locations on the firewall including all
areas where components come through the firewall, such as wiring and heater motor.
No sealant on Shelby added looms and wires or engine ground strap and mounting
screw.

ENGINE COMPARTMENT
Complete and
Master Cylinder and Rigid Brake Lines: Disc brake only, painted semi-gloss black
with brass adapters top and bottom attachment points.
Cap & Retaining Clips: Semi-gloss black finish.
Rigid Brake Lines: Natural steel finish.
Clutch Linkage: Correct style, finish and mounted properly. Correct natural rubber
firewall and bellhousing boot.
Z Bar: Natural steel, Mustang hi-po style
Upper Rod: Natural steel and hardware
Lower Rod and Spring: Cadmium plated rod and black spring.
Steering Column and Box: Steering column finish matches interior color.
Windshield Washer Assembly, Windshield Reservoir Assembly, Mounting

Brackets, Hoses and Pump: Original type and finish mounted in original location. May
have black or dark gray at washer nozzles.
Washer Bag: Black with white print and screw lid (early) or flip style (late)
Washer Pump: Single speed.

Voltage Regulator: (non-electronic stamped C5AF, FoMoCo (black) attached with
screws.
Decals: Service Specification.
Air Cleaner: Cubic Inch (may have AUTOLITE™ spark plug decal)
Voltage Regulator: paper tag
Engine ID: to be positioned long ways along lower intake of water pump.
Others: wiring labels, Service Specifications, Battery Test (filled out) &
Radiator/antifreeze paper tag.

Wiring: Proper gauge and color-code. Mounted in original location with proper attaching
clips. Black wrapping as original. Mustang oil sender wire clipped off at loom end near
front valve cover.

ENGINE COMPARTMENT
Complete and
Horns: Semi-gloss black with unpainted electrical spade. Original design mounted in
original location with proper mounting bracket.
Hood Pins, Trim Rings and Prop Rod: Original style. No Mustang style hood latch.
Early production used black prop rod. Prop rod attached radiator support and held down
by additional bolt on passenger side. Click pins with no lanyard wire.
Radiator, Cap, Hoses, Clamps and Fan Shroud:

Radiator: Ford type. Painted gloss black with proper core thickness and black rubber
overflow tube. Radiator Cap: - SMCO or AC.
Hoses: Molded rubber hose of original size and configuration, matching clamp style -
marked FoMoCo Clamps: Galvanized pedestal clamps.
Fan Shroud: Painted black with proper hardware. Rubber pad stapled to side closest to
battery tray.
Heater Hoses and Clamps:

Hoses: Black ribbed style with white stripe to pump side (one or both hoses).
Hose Clamps: Galvanized pedestal type.
Belts: Ink-stamped. Embossed or debossed. FoMoCo or Autolite.
Point Deductions for items not proper or original and not previously deducted for.

ENGINE COMPARTMENT
Complete and
Door Area:
Door, Painted Surfaces, Door Edges and Jambs: Correct for car (black low luster)
and style for interior. Grain completely visible on metal surfaces. Includes door ends
and bottom. Painted as exterior. Fender bolt (phosphate/oil) and fender pad (natural
unpainted rubber) should be present.
Door Weather-strip, Scuff Plates and Labels: Original style and finish in original
location with yellow glue. Sill plate labels, 6S001 thru 6S252“Shelby American Inc.”
logo, after6S252 “Shelby American Inc. Los Angeles California” logo (very early 65 may
have standard Ford logo).
Door Hardware: Includes latching mechanisms and hinges. Original style mounted in
original location. Door latch striker body – galvanized.
Seats: Correct seat and style for year. Black standard interior.

Seat Belts: 3-inch competition style with eye-bolt style anchors. Marked RAY BROWN
with chrome latches.
Carpet and Kick Panels: Original molded type carpet. Early units have serge edges
except at firewall, no toe pad and vinyl strip from floor pan to scuff plate. Vinyl strip is
black. Phosphated screws in proper locations. No dimmer switch grommet. Carpet on
top of firewall pad.
Kick Panels: Correct style and mounting hardware.
Underdash Area, Pedal Assembly, Firewall Cover and Shifter: Original style and
finish. Mounted in original location.
Pedals: Brake marked DISC BRAKE. Brake/Clutch pedal arms bottom 2/3rds are black,
accelerator pedal arm, phosphate/oil. No stainless trim on pads.
Accelerator Arm: Phosphate and oil.
Shifter: As factory Mustang
Hand Choke: Marked with white C, Mounted correctly under drivers side of dash.
Heater: Original style, proper hardware and finish mounted in original location. Heater
plenum, heater box, controls and ducting. Very early units with no red resistor on case
and/or three wire blower motors.

INTERIOR
Complete and
Painted Surfaces, Dash Color: Correct black (low luster) for year.
Dash Hardware, Steering Column and Wheel Assembly: Original style and finish.
Mounted in original location. Horn switch located between dash bezel and radio hole.
Turn Signal Lever: Bent forward to allow for clearance.
Steering Wheel: Real wood-rimmed only. All with Shelby center cap.
Radio: Ford. Correct for year. Dial face – early start with “6” later with “5”. Radio names
may be other than FORD and may vary.
Radio Delete Panel: Correct color, style and year.
Glove Box and Contents: Must have glove box light with lens stapled in place.
Contents to include correct style and year, ’65 Mustang and Shelby owner's manuals
plus the High Performance manual.
Dash Covering: Original grain and style. Black in color.
Quality of workmanship, condition and cleanliness of above 5 categories.
Tachometer, Horn Switch and Gauge Pod: Original type and style mounted in correct
location with proper hardware. RPM & CS™ logo marked 8000 rpm Tachometer and oil
gauge mounted with tachometer in fiberglass or plastic pod on dash attached with black
or chrome screws.
Dash Mounted Horn Switch: Black knob, spring loaded bottom off position.
Windshield Trim, Inside Mirror, Top Latches and Visor Brackets: Original style and
finish. Mounted in original location. No day-night mirrors.
Quality of workmanship, condition and cleanliness of above 2 categories.
Headliner: Headliner must have moonskin texture.

INTERIOR
Complete and
Package Tray and Quarter Panels: Correct style for interior and painted black.
Matching upper quarter panel trim and chrome air vent trim All were equipped with
black rear package tray in place of rear seat fold down seat. Quarter panel carpet
without serge edges.
Spare Tire and Wheel: Proper type for year and model. Cars with optional wheels may
have optional wheel or standard steel wheel (painted - silver/gray) for spare. Mounted
on rear package tray with correct black vinyl draw-string cover. Correct fold-down latch
hole cover and hardware.
Quality of workmanship, condition and cleanliness not previously deducted for.

TRUNK
Complete and
Mat and Cardboard: Proper 65 style and type material for year. Mounted in original
location. Gray plaid, molded rubber type. May have trunk underlay. Correct filler board
on drivers side.
Jack Assembly and Lug Wrench: Original style, painted semi-gloss black with proper
decal. Mounted in original location. Correct lug wrench(es), for jack and style of wheel.
Bungee cord with eyelets attached to trunk floor.
Painted Surfaces in Trunk: Must match exterior color. Rear fold down door and hinges
painted to match interior color. Exposed package tray surface unpainted fiberglass.
Sound Deadener: Must be present on trunk side of quarter panels (covered with
exterior color)
Note: Battery Carrier and Battery: If trunk mounted use sections below in ENGINE
COMPARTMENT.
Trunk Weather-strip and Jacking Instructions: Original style mounted on underside

of trunk lid with Detroit Locker sticker. Weather-strip shows sign of yellow adhesive.
Trunk Wiring: Correct style and covering. Routed as original, with correct attaching
clips and hardware.
Taillight Body, Gas Filler Neck, Trunk Latch and Flex Hose: Original design and
finish.
Clamps: wire style, indexed correctly.
Taillight Body: Must have proper push on type connections and proper tail light nut
spacers.
Black luggage guard strip glued to driver side wheel well. 5 protective opaque trim
screw covers at top edge of trunk.

EXTERIOR
Complete and
Body Workmanship and Fit: Smoothness of sheet metal, alignment of hood, trunk,
doors & fenders to body, attachment and alignment of chrome parts to body.
Paint Workmanship, Condition and Cleanliness: Match and consistency of color on
body panels. Must have orange peel.
Hood: Proper material and style for year and model. Hood: Proper material and style for
year and model.
Hood, Scoops, and Fiberglass Body Panels: Proper material and style for year and
model. Clear silicone around headlight buckets, end caps and side scoops. Tail lamp
panel - dark gray strip caulk, may or may not be visible. Sealant must be visible around
all side scoops (top and sides only) and quarter panel end caps.
Stripes: Original type, color and material placed in proper locations.

Side Stripes: Painted guardsman blue with GT350 decal.
Lemans Stripes: Factory on some. Usually dealer installed option. Passenger wiper
post painted.
Quality of workmanship, condition and cleanliness of the stripes
Grille and Grille Opening Trim: Correct design and hardware for year.
Grill: Gray-blue with black mounting tabs and supports (Some without vertical
supports). Black or natural attaching rivets.
Grill Trim: Anodized and painted grille trim as Mustangs with cast aluminum center
piece.
Headlamps and Doors: Matching, legal clear bulbs with embossed or script “FoMoCo”.
Doors, proper style and finish for year.
Parking, Tail, Back-Up, Running, Tag Lights: Original design for year. “FoMoCo”
script on all lenses.
Parking and Backup: Black boots Back-up light rubber gasket black.
Tag Light: Must have black braided cover.

EXTERIOR
Complete and
Bumpers, Guards, Bolts and Brackets: Proper style and chrome finish for year,
mounted properly. Rubber insulators between rear bumper mounts and upper bumper
guards to body. Bumper guards with rubber upper bumper.
Other Chrome Trim and Molding: Includes outside mirrors, vent windows, door
handles, windshield wiper arms, hood pins, emblems and other trim. Proper style and
finish for year, mounted in original location. Rear GT350 emblems, low gloss silver with
black lettering, mounted with pins. Early may not have tail light panel emblem.
Antenna: Round base and mast with beveled silver cap, in proper location.
Radio Delete: No antenna or hole with proper cowl plug.
Quality of workmanship, condition and cleanliness of above 23categories
Windshield, Quarter Windows and Other Glass: Must be Carlite glass in block or
script. Side widows and vents clear glass only.

UNDERCARRIAGE
Complete and
Front Suspension and Steering: Front suspension lowered one inch at upper control
arm.
Natural Parts: Tie rods, tie rod adjustment sleeves, idler arm, coil springs (may be
semi-gloss black), drag link, pitman arm, steering box, strut rods, strut washers, sway
bar end links and mounting brackets, spindles, spring seats.
No grease fittings on tie rod ends.
Semi-Gloss Black Parts: 1” sway bar,
Upper Control Arms: dipped black with natural ball joint ends 4-rivet design. Grease
fitting plugs on ball joints & upper A arm inner mount.
Lower Control Arms: jacking tabs and be dipped black with natural ball-joint ends.
Front Brakes – Disc:

Calipers: natural finish with proper mounting hardware. Some late cars equipped with
calipers with outer half of body plated with nickel.
Splash and Dust Shields: semi-gloss black finish.
Caliper Mounts: cast iron finish.
Front Wheel Wells:

Front Fender: Topside may have sound deadener, show signs of primer and body
color overspray or combination of all.
Splash Guards: Black with some sound deadener. Inner Fenders: Wheel-side, engine
compartment black with deadener overspray.

UNDERCARRIAGE
Complete and
Undercarriage: Undercarriage painted red oxide or black primer depending on Ford

production date . Majority were red oxide. Body color overspray fading to tunnel and
pinch weld paint overspray.
Over-Ride Installation: Mustang suspension bumpers cut at frame rail. New rear end
bumper mount welded to inside edge of the rear frame rail. Area sprayed with semi-
gloss black.
Rear Outer Seat Belt Mounts: Relocated on cars equipped with over-rides.
Lower Pinch Welds: Blacked out from front wheel well to rear valance.
Workmanship, condition and cleanliness of underside of floor pans.
Rigid Fuel and Brake Lines: Natural steel finish. Routed in original location.
Flexible Fuel and Brake Lines: Black rubber. Original factory markings. Differential
vent, black, mounted in proper location, properly crimped.
Bell Housing, Transmission and Linkage:

Natural aluminum Borg-Warner T-10™. May use cast iron tailshaft.
Bellhousing: Natural aluminum finish. May have block color overspray is on 4 speed
cars.
Bellhousing Plate: Engine color overspray (none or thin at starter location)
Linkage: Phosphate and oil finish.
Shifter Body: zinc, cadmium or galvanized.
Speedometer Cable: Routed in correct fashion, correct color and application for year.
Properly sealed at firewall.
Transmission Support and Mount: Correct style painted semi-gloss black with proper
hardware.
Driveshaft, Loop and U-Joints: Mounted properly. Original type. No grease fittings.
Natural steel and cast finish. With driveshaft loop.

UNDERCARRIAGE
Complete and
Third Member: Must be 9-inch unit red oxide primer with correct natural machined
surfaces, with no fill plug. Snubber, Yoke and Mount: Proper style and design for year.
Both natural. Attaching Hardware: natural or silver locking nuts with copper washers.
Identification tag present.
Rear End Housing: Must be 65 style 9-inch unit mounted with correct hardware.
Painted semi-gloss black.
Rear Suspension and Hardware:

Rear Natural Parts: Leaf springs, leaf spring clamps, spring shackles, shock mount
plates, leaf spring U-bolts.
Over-Ride Traction Bars: Over-ride traction bars painted semi-gloss black. Large rear
mounting bolt head ground down. Rubber traction bar shield attached to seal floor hole.
Special rear end bumper attached to mounting bracket on rear frame rail.
Rear Axle Limiting Hardware: Properly mounted with correct hardware. Natural 1/8”
steel cable with washer attached to eye bolt mounted on body.
Rear Brakes: Drums, cast iron finish with black brush painted face on cars without steel
wheels. Brake backing plates are FoMoCo and semi-gloss black finish.
Wheel Cylinders: cast iron finish with small zinc dichromate bleeders
Silver or black plated mounting bolts.
Brake Adjustment Hole: (if punched out) is to have plain black rubber plug,
Brake Shoe Retainers: zinc dichromate finish.
Parking Brake Cables and Hardware: Natural steel finish with proper rubber boots.
Shock Absorbers: Orange Koni shocks with eagle-style decal. Most with Koni shocks
had special large head shock bolts in front. Rear shocks with bell shaped boot covering
lower locking nuts.

UNDERCARRIAGE
Complete and
Rear Wheel Wells: Body color over sound deadener. May have some black overspray.
Exhaust System, Clamps and Hangers: Side-exiting exhaust painted black. Except
cars delivered with Mustang style dual exhaust with turn downs..
Side exiting exhaust used generic clamps and saddles. Mustang hangers may still be
attached to vehicle but not used. Special hangers used to hang exhaust rear spring
front eye bolt. After approx 5S036 exhaust hanger added to floor.
Gas Tank: Original type and Ni-terne steel finish. Sending unit correctly finish and
style. Drain plug required.
Sending unit: Correct hose, clamps, finish and style.
Grommets, Attaching Nuts, Bolts and Washers: Original style and finish.
Wheels: Proper size and correct style for year and make. ’65 standard 15-inch Kelsey
Hayes steel wheels painted silver or optional 15-inch Cragar 5-spoke design.
Center Caps, Valve Stems and Lug Nuts: Correct style for year and wheel style.
Proper color painted cap if optional wheel. All chrome lug nuts.
Tires: Proper size and style for year and make - 7.75X15 Goodyear Blue Dot. No P-
Metric radials allowed. All five tires must match.
