Preface

6 SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel Administration and Configuration Guide

SECTION 1

Welcome to SmartPlant® Enterprise

Control Panel
SmartPlant® Enterprise Control Panel is a framework for managing modules that participate in
the administration of a SmartPlant Enterprise system. This framework is based on SmartPlant
Foundation technology, which provides a comprehensive electronic data storage, exchange,
management, and integration system for SmartPlant Enterprise.

Enterprise Dataflow Module

Using the Enterprise Dataflow module of the SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel, you can
control how mapping information flows between participating authoring tools in a SmartPlant
Enterprise system. The mapped information is shared between the different authoring tools
using a publish and retrieve mechanism. This dataflow between the tools consists of the
mapping of classes and properties using map files, which specify how the mapped data from
one authoring tool relates to the mapped data of another authoring tool in the system.
The SmartPlant Enterprise integration approach is based on both SmartPlant Foundation
authoring applications and SmartPlant external authoring tools publishing their tool schema data
to a SmartPlant Foundation system. Each authoring tool can also retrieve the mapped data
published by the other authoring tools from the SmartPlant Foundation database.
An administrator can edit the mapping dataflow of published and retrieved classes and
properties. The next time the authoring tool publishes or retrieves mapped data, the change to
the mapping dataflow is passed to other authoring tools. In this way an administrator can control
the dataflow of mapped data between different authoring tools. Administrators can also manage
and report on the dataflow for your business needs.
Information that is available from the tools includes:
 Type of tool (SmartPlant Foundation authoring application or SmartPlant Enterprise external
authoring tool)
 Number of mapped published properties from each tool
 Number of mapped retrieved properties (from SmartPlant Foundation and each installed
tool)
 Number of unmapped properties from each tool
Information that you can view includes:
 Tool-to-SmartPlant Foundation dataflow for properties
 Tool-to-SmartPlant Foundation dataflow for enumerated lists
 Tool-to-tool dataflow comparison report for properties

SECTION 2

Security model
The SmartPlant Foundation security model is a flexible mechanism to control role-based user
access to data and the operations that can be performed on that data. The security model is
comprised of:
 Users
 Roles, domains, and access groups
 Configurations
 Role assignments
A user is assigned a role in a configuration. Roles are related to access groups, which control
access to the different components of the system. The security model also controls user access
to:
 Menus and toolbars
 Shortcut menu commands
 Relationship manipulation and navigation
The SmartPlant Foundation Desktop Client is used to configure the security model by creating
and relating security objects. No additional schema modeling of classes, interfaces, or
relationship definitions is required.
Once the security access model is designed, the various levels of access are modeled by
creating access groups and relating them to roles. The access groups are related to the relevant
methods, interfaces, and view definitions, to which they have to grant access.
SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel is delivered with several default roles, access groups, and
configurable GUI items that are loaded with the default SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel
administrative files.
For more information on configurable GUI items, see Update and Configure Items on the
SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel Interface in the SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel
Administration and Configuration Guide.
To configure SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel security, you must create users, configure the
users' roles, then assign or relate each new user to access groups using the SmartPlant
Foundation Desktop Client.
The SmartPlant Foundation How to Configure the Security Model guide describes the
configuration and components of the SmartPlant Foundation security model. You can access
the guide by clicking Help > Printable Guides.

Access groups
Access groups govern user access to SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel commands and
navigation, and are modeled to represent different levels of functional access. The SmartPlant
Foundation administrator assigns users to an access user group set up for SmartPlant
Enterprise Control Panel. The access user group to which a user is assigned dictates how that
user views and manages tool mapping data.
To grant a user permission to access a specific command or function, you must associate that
user's roles to the appropriate access group. The following access groups are delivered in
SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel.

Access Group
Access Group Role SPE_Administrator Role SPE_Viewer
Description
SPEAdmin YES
SPEViewer YES YES

Access Group Access Group SPEM SPEL P&ID SPI 3D LLA PBS
Description
SPE2DEditor YES YES YES YES
SPE3DEditor YES
SPESPFEditor YES YES
To configure access groups, you need to log on to the SmartPlant Foundation Desktop Client as
an administrator.
These are the default access groups delivered with the Sample Data SPE Map Tool
Templates. If you do not load the sample data, then the access groups in this chart do not exist.
For more information, see Roles and Access Groups in the SmartPlant Foundation How to
Configure the Security Model guide.

SECTION 3

Infrastructure
In SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel, the infrastructure refers to the items and configuration
that support the SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel software, as connected to the SmartPlant
Foundation software.
For detailed information about configuring SmartPlant Foundation infrastructure and the
infrastructure model, see How to Configure the Infrastructure Model delivered with SmartPlant
Foundation.

Plants and projects

A plant is a specific class of object that represents the top level of the data hierarchy in a
SmartPlant Enterprise system. A project is a logical unit of data that is a subset of the items that
make up a plant. A project is used for making controlled, incremental changes to the data in a
plant. There can be multiple projects for a plant at any given time.
The Plant is the first level in the configuration hierarchy and usually contains the as-built data.
The project must be created in the plant scope. This is a way of forcing a project to be created in
the Plant. Each project can be created as separate server configuration, which SmartPlant
Enterprise Control Panel can access and then display the project's data.
For more information about creating and configuring plants and projects for integration, see the
SmartPlant Foundation Integration Administrator's Guide delivered with SmartPlant Foundation.

SECTION 6

Converting Registered Tools into Tool

Objects
Administrators of SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel can set up a system by manually
converting any registered tools into tool objects. SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel only works
with tool objects, which are created as specific tool objects for SmartPlant Enterprise Control
Panel. Tool objects hold the data that is required to edit the map files, such as the map file
location.
Tool signature objects are created when a tool application first registers with SmartPlant
Foundation to publish and retrieve data. The tool signature objects loaded into SmartPlant
Foundation are then manually converted into tool objects.
Through this conversion process, the tool objects are created with the correct tool
representation. For example, Signature Intools is renamed to SmartPlant Instrumentation. To
make the tool objects editable in SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel, more information is
required on the tool object. This includes:
 Whether the tool is an external authoring tool or a SmartPlant Foundation authoring
application
 Map file location (host + directory + file name)
 Whether the tool supports the editing of mapped data
 Tool images and icons
Intergraph recommends that you display the newly created items in a list window in SmartPlant
Foundation so that any editing can then take place.

 In order to make the flow of selecting publishable and retrievable tools better, Intergraph
recommends that you relate the tool object to other tool objects for publish and retrieve.
 For the first release of SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel this conversion is done in
SmartPlant Foundation.

Convert registered tools into tool objects

1. Log into SmartPlant Foundation Desktop Client as a user with administration permissions.
2. Set the scope to the server configuration for SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel.
3. Click Find > Integration > Signatures. Verify that any new tool signatures are displayed.

New tool signatures are created when a new tool application registers with
SmartPlant Foundation.
4. Right-click the new tool signatures in the list view.

SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel Administration and Configuration Guide 19

Converting Registered Tools into Tool Objects

5. On the shortcut menu, click Generate Tool Items.

6. After the tool objects have been generated, click SPECP Administration > Mapping Tools.
Verify that the paths to the map files are correct.
If the paths are incorrect, use either List Edit or Update to change the path to the
correct location.
7. Verify that the new tool objects are displayed for each of the new tools by logging into
SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel using the same scope as set previously.
8. Check that the tool panel titles for the converted tools are correctly displayed in the
Carousel.

SECTION 7

Configuring Remote Map File Directories

As an administrator, you must set certain permissions on the network share directories where
the map files are stored. These relate to the process identity of the SmartPlant Enterprise
Control Panel server. Some administrators run permissions with a specially created user, some
run permissions as a network service, some run permissions as an app pool identity, and so on.
The SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel server identity requires read and write access to the
map files, so that any changes can be saved. There are five possible configurations for the
server process identity, where map files are stored on locked down remote directories (UNC
shares). These five configurations are:

Server process local user (Recommended)

1. Set the SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel server process to run as a local user, as
defined on the SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel server machine. This is how SmartPlant
Foundation runs by default.
2. On the remote computer, create an identical user with an identical password, and allow this
user access to the file share.

Application pool local directory

1. Set the SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel server IIS application pool user to
ApplicationPoolIdentity.
2. Store the map files in a local directory on the SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel server
computer.
3. Share this directory with the appropriate permission to allow the integration tools access to
the map files.

 The user's DefaultAppPool will need to be given appropriate permissions on this local
directory.
 Appropriate permissions must be given to the users and groups who access the files.

Application pool remote directory

1. Set the SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel server IIS application pool user to
ApplicationPoolIdentity.
2. Store the map files in a remote directory on the same network domain as the SmartPlant
Enterprise Control Panel server computer.
3. Share this directory with the appropriate permission to allow the integration tools access to
the map files.
In order for the SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel server to be able to edit the map
files, the security on the map file directory must be set up to give appropriate permissions to the
Everyone domain group account.

Application pool Network Service user

1. Set the SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel server IIS application pool user to Network
Service.

SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel Administration and Configuration Guide 21

Configuring Remote Map File Directories

2. Store the map files in a remote directory on the same network domain as the SmartPlant
Enterprise Control Panel server computer.
3. Share this directory with the appropriate permission to allow the integration tools access to
the map files.
In order for the SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel server to be able to edit the map
files, the security on the map file directory must be set up to give appropriate permissions to the
domain account for the SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel server. The Network Service user
also has to be given permissions on the system Temp directory to cache some files. For
example, c:\windows\temp.

Application pool domain group user

1. Set the SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel server IIS application pool user to a valid
domain group user account.
2. Store the map files in a remote directory on the same network domain as the SmartPlant
Enterprise Control Panel server computer.
3. Share this directory with the appropriate permission to allow the integration tools access to
the map files.
In order for the SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel server to be able to edit the map
files, the security permission on the map file directory must be set up to give appropriate
permissions to the same domain user account as that set to run the SmartPlant Enterprise
Control Panel server.

SECTION 8

Generating Localized Resource

Assemblies
Use the SPEResGen utility to generate a localized resource assembly for the SmartPlant
Enterprise Control Panel client. You need to use this utility to generate a .dll file containing the
localized strings to pick up the correct language. This utility is delivered in the install directory of
the SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel server under the Localization sub-directory.
SPEResGen is a command line application that is used to generate a new assembly containing
the supplied localized resources. It requires the following arguments:

Argument Value Example

/al The path to the al.exe file included C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft
in the Microsoft Windows SDK. SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\bin\al.exe
/resx The path to the localized resource Enter the name of the resource file in the
file. same directory as the
SPEResGenExecutable. For example,
SPEResources.resx or the fully qualified
path to the resource file.
/sc The specific language and culture, en-GB for English with language strings
for which to generate the assembly. specifically for users in Great Britain or en
for generic English translations.
/type The type of assembly to generate, Possible values are SPEClient or
whether for the SmartPlant SPEServer.
Enterprise Control Panel Client or
for the SmartPlant Enterprise
Control Panel Server.
To use the SPEResGen utility:
 At the command prompt type the path to the SPEResGen executable, followed by the
required arguments.
Examples of generating a localized client assembly for the generic en English culture and
de German culture are:
<SPECP Server Install Path>\Localization\SPEResGen.exe /al="C:\Program
Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\bin\al.exe" /sc="en"
/Type=SPEClient /resx=TranslatedResources.resx
<SPECP Server Install Path>\Localization\SPEResGen.exe /al="C:\Program
Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\bin\al.exe" /sc="de"
/Type=SPEServer /resx=C:\Temp\TranslatedResources.resx.
After running this command, the SPEResGen utility creates a new folder with the name of the
language entered as an argument in a subdirectory of the working directory. Into this directory,
the SPEResGen utility writes the localized resource assembly. For SmartPlant Enterprise
Control Panel client, the assembly is called SPE.Infrastructure.Resources.dll, and for the
SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel Server, the assembly is called SPE.Server.Resources.dll.

SmartPlant Enterprise Control Panel Administration and Configuration Guide 23

Generating Localized Resource Assemblies

To use this new localization assembly with the correct language localized strings, copy the
directory into the executable directory of the component. For the SmartPlant Enterprise Control
Panel client, this is the directory where the SPEClient.exe is located. For the SmartPlant
Enterprise Control Panel server, this is the virtual directory where the SPE.Server.dll is being
used.

 The translated resource file must be located in a sub directory with the name of the culture
for which it has been generated, such as en for English
 A list of standard language and culture codes supported by this utility can be located at:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.globalization.cultureinfo%28v=vs.71%29.asp
x
(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.globalization.cultureinfo%28v=vs.71%29.as

 A prerequisite for using this utility is that you have the Microsoft Windows SDK installed on
the computer you are using, to make use of the assembly linker tool. The Windows SDK is
available for download from the Microsoft website:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh272952.aspx
