1. Dystopia

Enter the nightmare

This future does implode
A techno city-state
A prison, nothing more
Rounded up like cattle
You're forced into the trains
Nothing that you've ever known
Will bring you so much pain

[Pre-chorus]
If you try to resist me
You'll find me inhumane
But if you just submit
You'll live your life a slave
You'll love your servitude
We'll medicate your pain
With our technology
We'll always keep you safe

Micro-chipped like dogs

Their thoughts are not their own
All that's left of human kind
Is now in their kind
Planned out through centuries
Patient and contrived
Played on man's naiveté
Gullible and blind

[Pre-chorus]
If you try to resist me
You'll find me inhumane
But if you just submit
You'll live your life a slave
You'll love your servitude
We'll medicate your pain
With our technology
We'll always keep you safe

[Chorus]
The nightmare unfolds before my eyes
I will resist 'til end of time
A spirit born free
Has to break these chains
We're lost, we must find our way
We'll find our way!

They say that you're a danger

To everything that's pure
There are too many of you
They're offering the cure
Swift extermination
If you refuse the game
Arrested development
Your vaccinated fate

[Pre-chorus]
If you try to resist me
You'll find me inhumane
But if you just submit
You'll live your life a slave
You'll love your servitude
We'll medicate your pain
With our technology
We'll always keep you safe

[Chorus]
The nightmare unfolds before my eyes
I will resist 'til end of time
A spirit born free
Has to break these chains
We're lost, we must find our way
We'll find our way!

2. Anthem

In your eyes I see you're desperate and in hunger

Reclaim your future, your path's uncertain
See this child is raised in hate and in anger
His eyes wide open, his rage so focused

[Chorus]
Torn asunder, our destiny is in sight
This is the anthem to celebrate your life
Torn asunder, our destiny is in sight
This is the anthem to celebrate your life

This single mother she is strained and she suffers

She slaves away, her life in turmoil
The homeless man had it all and now has nothing
His spirit broken, plagued from injustice

[Chorus]
Torn asunder, our destiny is in sight
This is the anthem to celebrate your life
Torn asunder, our destiny is in sight
This is the anthem to celebrate your life

[Bridge]
We have the power make our lives what they ought to be
Reconnect with our humanity
Transcend to a higher place, accepting reality
You are the key to the life you seek

[Chorus]
Torn asunder, our destiny is in sight
This is the anthem to celebrate your life
Torn asunder, our destiny is in sight
This is the anthem to celebrate your life
3. Boiling Point

I sit alone and watch hypocrisy

I will fight
My frustration ever building
Tensions rise
The air runs thick with hostility
My thought are boiling and I'm full rage

[Chorus]
I'm at the end
Patience run thin
I think I'll lose my mind
Taking no more
Your death I swore
They will not break my will

I'll make this your darkest hour

Hate will rise
My force will devastate your power
Hear them cry
I vowed to cure my aggravation
Your demise
I'm coming forth to bring a world of pain

[Chorus]
I'm at the end
Patience run thin
I think I'll lose my mind
Taking no more
Your death I swore
They will not break my will

Satisfied eradication
Deed is done
Your spirit's dead and finally mine
Now you're gone
My sanity a fixed condition
Not your pawn
Vindication written in your blood

[Chorus]
I'm at the end
Patience run thin
I think I'll lose my mind
Taking no more
Your death I swore
They will not break my will

Boiling Point
Boiling Point

4. Anguish Of Youth

The wind's crying softly

Tears stream down her precious cheeks
The last goodbye to those she loves
Before the final sleep
The pain is just too much
She can't even face another day
Oh, the past, it haunts her
The scars won't fade away

[Chorus]
The tragedy still haunts her
The pain she cannot bear
She wants to smile
She wants to live
Free from a life of despair
The tragedy still haunts her
The pain she cannot bear
She wants to laugh
She wants to love
Free from a life of despair

A life of pain and anguish

An empty shell yearns to be free
To break out from this prison
Of flesh and blood, she leaves
Just one more shot of whiskey
To chase the pills that help her sleep
Now she's one step closer
Her quest for inner peace

[Chorus]
The tragedy still haunts her
The pain she cannot bear
She wants to smile
She wants to live
Free from a life of despair
The tragedy still haunts her
The pain she cannot bear
She wants to laugh
She wants so love
Free from a life of despair

The figure stands above her

Upon her lifeless chest he beats
He draws the soul back to her
She now begins to breathe
Awakened from this nightmare
Her body shivers and it shakes
She's forged a new perspective
The scars begin to fade

[Chorus]
The tragedy still haunts her
The pain she cannot bear
She wants to smile
She wants to live
Free from a life of despair
The tragedy still haunts her
The pain she cannot bear
She wants to laugh
She wants so love
Free from a life of despair

5. V

His mind is worn and so tortured

Suffering was part of the plan
Blades flying swift with justice
Remember the idea not the man

Rising up from the fire

Unified to be free
Stoking our fears with their lies
You are the key

Sedated they kept us all dormant

Unknowing, our lives lived in vain
Like mindless drones we're devoted
We’ve welcomed our fate as their slaves

[Chorus]
Prepare for victory
Our minds have been awakened
Rid your life of tyranny
We are the resistance

No fear, stand tall

Resist
Tyranny falls
No lives, no war
Resist
Victory calls

Rising up from the fire

Unified to be free
Stoking our fears with their lies
You are the key

In the end we were coiled with the serpent

It took all we had to break free
Our victory, it came without violence
We vanquished, they fell to their knees

[Chorus]
Prepare for victory
Our minds have been awakened
Rid your life of tyranny
We are the resistance

No fear, stand tall

Resist
Tyranny falls
No lives, no war
Resist
Victory calls

6. Dark City

This place is dark and grey

Uneasy, I feel torn apart
My mind is clouded and blurred
This city is interchanging

Sacrifice memories past

Unaware of what I've become

Constant changes are imploring me

Search my mind, look for the answers
Finding nothing but this fear in me
Immersing myself in his feeling
Realizing I am not alone
They are watching people changing
Unconsciously twisting memory
Gathering our human feeling

[Chorus]
Experimenting, to understand the human soul
Endangered they'll fade away
The wont deceive me
They'll never take my soul away
Their life from fades

Fill our heads with false identity

Synchronizing our confusion
Using the dead for their own need
Parasitic infestation
Imprisonment in celestial space
Unlocking the human life force
Escaping their grasp now we are free
Their objective failed unknowing

[Chorus]
Experimenting, to understand the human soul
Endangered they'll fade away
The wont deceive me
They'll never take my soul away
Their life from fades

7. Equilibrium

Inject and suppress the human feeling

Love, hate, and sorrow leads us to eradication
Mankind survives, to see another lifetime
What is the final price our people will be paying'

Our lives so colorless and ruled with false devotion

Destroying anything that triggers our emotion
The enemy is one who feels the world around them
Interrogated, now they're facing their own judgment

[Chorus]
Destroying our stimuli
Force us too defy all that is human
The serum keeps us pacified
Stand to feel alive
Our instinct will take over

Annihilation of our feeling

Emancipation our minds healing
Determination defines existence
Eradicate with our resistance

If people awake they'll be free from this daydream

Human instinct will break through and keep us feeling
We will not medicate, their grasp will surely crumble
Take back humanity and devastate their power

[Chorus]
Destroying our stimuli
Force us too defy all that is human
The serum keeps us pacified
Stand to feel alive
Our instinct will take over

8. Days Of Rage

They beat you black and blue

You're fleeced, your anger's seething
They turned their backs on you, betrayed!
Fight or die, kill or be killed
Society's collapsing
You watch your world die and decay

Days of rage
Days of rage
Days of rage

Unhinged and full of hate

A time bomb clearly ticking
No more, nothing left to lose
Your money can't be found
Anger, pain, starvation
Betrayed! Domesticated fool

Days of rage
Days of rage
Days of rage

Lies destroy life

Days of rage
Lies destroy life
Days of rage
Lies destroy life
Days of rage
Lies destroy life

Decadence and ignorance

Led you to this suffering
Prison camps created just for you
Will you survive' What will you do'
When the rug's pulled from under you
Hell is what you future's coming to

Days of rage
Days of rage
Days of rage
Days of rage

9. End Of Innocence

Through the essence of your smile

Makes this fight all worth while
Oh' the perseverance of your life

There you were by my side

Giving me strength through your love and pride
She says carry on, carry on
Oh the stars they shine so bright
Are they there for you and I'
I know you'll see the light

[Chorus]
Carry on, be strong my son
This is the end of innocence
Carry on, when I'm gone
This is the end of innocence
This is the end my friend

Sacrifice is all we have

Finding solace in your laugh
The freedom will ease your pain

Washing tides and seasons change

Things will never be the same
Oh' she says carry on, carry on

[Chorus]
Carry on, be strong my son
This is the end of innocence
Carry on, when I'm gone
This is the end of innocence
This is the end

10. Soylent Green

11. Iron Will

Alone… Oh I know your lost and trying to find your way

You have been betrayed… led astray
Anger… Stirs inside and is tearing you apart
Beating from this cold and broken heart

You are stoned

You will stand and fight this emptiness and pain
Cast away your suffering, seize the day
Fire… Extinguish the flames that haunt your mind
Take control of your life
[Chorus:]
You are so [?], in your soul
Overcome the trials and tribulations
Live your life, take control
You have broken through the threshold

[Guitar solo]

You have won, oh the battle deep within your soul is done
Troubles washed away, a brand new day
Focused… you have overcome the challenges of life
You are the life you will survive

[Chorus]

12. Tragedy & Triumph

Here we stand,
I know it's always been our home
We're awakened from our prison
A new day, it's finally here,
We walk the streets without fear
Our humanity has risen
Digging out those microchips
That kept us dormant to resist
Singing sings of our triumph
To maintain our current state
We must try to innovate
Our minds and our future

[Bridge]
We lived through their lies
No we'll always keep
A conscious mind
And we hold our heads up high
We will never let our spirit die

The brave new world,

You know it's always been a lie
Pushed with their manipulation
Cast away the unseen chains
They shackle you a slave
Take control of your existence
Flushing out their poison ways
Live to fight another day
The time is now to start living
We've taken back our dignity
We are alive and we are free
A revolution of our spirit

[Bridge]
We lived through their lies
No we'll always keep
A conscious mind
And we hold our heads up high
We will never let our spirit die

[Chorus]
Time is on our side
We have prevailed
Humanity's ultimate struggle
Hearts and minds
Are joined in victory
We are triumphant end eternal
Time is on our side
We have prevailed
Humanity's ultimate struggle
Hearts and minds
Are joined in victory
We are triumphant end eternal

Here we stand
I know it's always been our home
We can build a brand new future
A new day, it's finally here
We live our lives without fear
Our humanity has risen
The task at hand to educate
So we don't make the same mistake
Never take the road to serfdom
We are aware, we are awake
Dystopia we did escape
Never to repeat the nightmare

[Bridge]
We lived through their lies
No we'll always keep
A conscious mind
And we hold our heads up high
We will never let our spirit die

[Chorus]
Time is on our side
We have prevailed
Humanity's ultimate struggle
Hearts and minds
Are joined in victory
We are triumphant end eternal
Time is on our side
We have prevailed
Humanity's ultimate struggle
Hearts and minds
Are joined in victory
We are triumphant end eternal

Dystopia is the tenth studio album from American heavy metal band Iced
Earth. Released on October 17th, 2011, it's the bands first album with new
vocalist Stu Block, after former vocalist Matt Barlow left the band for a
second time on August 6th, 2011.[2] While not a concept album, many of the
albums songs are inspired by dystopian themes and movies, such as V for
Vendetta, Dark City, Soylent Green, and Equilibrium.[3] Two of the albums
songs ("Dystopia" and "Tragedy and Triumph") also feature the return of the
"Something Wicked" -storyline from previous albums Something Wicked This
Way Comes, Overture of the Wicked, Framing Armageddon and The Crucible
of Man.[3]

[edit] Background
On March 3rd, 2011, vocalist Matt Barlow issued a statement on Iced Earth's
official website, stating that he was retiring from the band in order to spend
more time with his family.[4] Barlow was still going to take part in the bands
upcoming festival gigs during the summer, and he played his final show with
Iced Earth on August 6th, at the Wacken -festival in Germany.[2]
Shortly after announcing Barlow's departure from the band, Iced Earth
announced that Into Eternity -frontman Stu Block had been chosen as the
bands new lead vocalist.[5] In the same statement the band announced a
massive world tour that will take the band to place's they've never played
before.
On June 6th, Iced Earth's leader and guitarist Jon Schaffer revealed that the
band would be recording a new album titled "Dystopia", tentatively due
before the end of the 2011.[6] On July 13th, Jon Schaffer posted an update
from the studio stating that they were currently master tracking the album
in Florida.[7] In the same update he also revealed some song titles, including
"Anthem", "V" and "Dystopia."
On July 27th, the cover art and release dates for Dystopia were released.[3]
The album was announced to be released on October 17th in Europe and on
October 18th in the US. In the same announcement, Jon Schaffer revealed
more details about the album and it's song's. Although not a concept album,
many of the songs are inspired by dystopian themes and movies, such as V
for Vendetta, Dark City, Soylent Green, and Equilibrium.[3] Two of the
albums songs ("Dystopia" and "Tragedy and Triumph") also feature the
return of the "Something Wicked" -storyline and the bands mascot Set
Abominae.[3]
On September 16th the first episode of the making of Dystopia was released
on Century Media's YouTube channel.[8] The second, third, fourth and fifth
episodes were released on September 23rd, October 1st, October 6th and
October 21st respectively.[9][10][2][11]
[edit] Songs
[edit] Dystopia
The album's title track features the return of the "Something Wicked" -
storyline and the bands mascot Set Abominae.[3] In an update on the bands
official website, Jon Schaffer told how "Dystopia" fits in to the "Somethin
Wicked Saga":
"The opening song is a step back timeline-wise from the 'Come What May'.
'Come What May sets the scenario that it's up to us and the decisions we
make that will determine the future of the human race. These two songs
['Dystopia' and 'Tragedy an Triumph'] take place at a time when people are
in highly controlled prison-like city states, and their eventual emancipation in
the closer, 'Tragedy and Triumph'."
On the origin of the idea of continuing the "Something Wicked" -storyline,
Schaffer said:
"I remember it hit me like a ton of bricks in '97, the whole 'Something
Wicked' story did. I thought, 'Man, this is going to be so cool.' Many years
later, we were on tour for 'Crucible' and we were doing an interview over in
Eastern Europe. A buddy of mine said, 'You know, Jon, this whole
'Something Wicked' thing could be true.' I thought about it a moment and
said, 'Well, I don't know about that. But there are some creepy parallels in
contemporary life.' So as I was thinking about all of the great movies,
albums, and books with dystopian themes, I remembered that conversation
and it occurred to me that the 'Something Wicked' story could continue in a
few tracks here very nicely"
"Dystopia" is also one of Jon Schaffer's and Stu Block's favorite tracks on the
album.[12][13]
On October 6th, "Dystopia" was released on Revolver magazine's official
website.[14]
[edit] Anthem
The second track, "Anthem", is one of Stu Block's favorites on the album.[1]
In an interview with "Heavy Metal Thunder", Block talked about the song:
"It's a very, very epic song. It celebrates life. It celebrates the human spirit.
It's a celebration of people and i think that's a very good subject matter. It's
a very catchy song."
[1]
Block further described "Anthem" in his interview on "The Aebyss":
"It's so positive. It touches on aspects of people's lives and it's just, you
know, giving a really positive message, 'you have the key to your own
success, you have the key to your own life, don't let anybody get you down
and tell you what to do' kind of thing."
[13]

"Anthem" (along with "Days of Rage"), was released early on promotional

CD that came with the October 2011 issue of Rock Hard magazine.[15]
[edit] End of Innocence
Another one of Block's favorites, "End of Innocence" was written by Block for
his mother, who is battling cancer, and is terminal.[1] In his interview, Block
describer the song:
"It's a very, very close subject for me, and I'm very proud of this song. I'm
proud to show it to my mother and I think, because it's coming from a very,
very true place, the fans will connect to this."
[1]

[edit] Tragedy and Triumph

The last song on the album, "Tragedy and Triumph" will be the second song
about the "Something Wicked Saga." Jon Schaffer talked about "Tragedy and
Triumph" as well as the title track:
"The opening song is a step back timeline-wise from the 'Come What May'.
'Come What May' sets the scenario that it's up to us and the decisions we
make that will determine the future of the human race. These two songs
['Dystopia' and 'Tragedy an Triumph'] take place at a time when people are
in highly controlled prison-like city states, and their eventual emancipation in
the closer, 'Tragedy and Triumph'."
[3]

In an interview on "The Aebyss", Schaffer was asked if "Tragedy and

Triumph" will be the end of the "Something Wicked Saga", to which he
replied:
" It's my wishful thinking I think, but, you know, at the end of the day that
doesn't mean I won't write anything more. I mean the cool thing about the
"Something Wicked" -story is that you can take any period of human history,
and apply it to the "Something Wicked" -universe and come-up with a
badass story to write about, so to say that there's never going to be
anymore songs about it would be foolish, because I don't know that, I mean,
I'm not thinking about the next record right now, you know. That'll come up
in due time and I'll write about whatever I feel like. [That] is the right thing
to do just like I always do. What that'll be I don't know, but I know I could
tell hours and hours more stories related to the "Something Wicked Saga."
That's easy. And it's actually fun to do it."
[12]

"Tragedy and Triumph" is also one of Schaffer's[12] and Stu Blocks favorite
tracks on the album. Block talked about the song in an interview.
"'Tragedy and Triumph' is another great song about achieving your goals,
about triumphing over diversity's in your life, people that struggle every day
with things that they've been hit with."
[1]

[edit] Release
On September 7th, the band released a new re-recording of the song
"Dante's Inferno", from their album Burnt Offerings.[16] This was the first
Iced Earth -song with vocalist Stu Block to be released to the public.
"Anthem" and "Days of Rage" was released early on promotional CD that
came with the October 2011 issue of Rock Hard magazine.[15]
On October 6th, the title-track was released on Revolver magazine's official
website.[14]
The album was released via Century Media Records on October 17th in
Europe, and on October 18th in the US. The album was made available as a
normal CD, a gatefold LP and as a digital download as well as two limited
editions. The first is a limited digipak that includes two bonus tracks, a
slipcase, and a printed patch.[17] The second is a limited deluxe box set
containing the limited digipak with the printed patch and bonus tracks, as
well as a belt buckle, a lighter, a wrist band, a printed patch, a beer coaster,
and a set of 3 buttons.[18]

The response to the album has been mostly positive. Mape Ollila, from
Imperiumi, called the album "without a doubt Iced Earth's best album as
whole since 1996's The Dark Saga, maybe even better than that," while Max
Lussier from The Newreview called the album "easily the best thing to come
from the IE camp in nearly a decade."[25] Caj Källmalmm from Hallowed also
called Dystopia "by far the best full length album from Iced Earth."[21]
Many of the songs, such as the title track, "Anthem" and "Tragedy and
Triumph", have been praised. Mape Ollila described the title-track as "a fast,
classic Iced Earth composition"[19] and Juha Attola from Kaaos called it
"familiar Iced Earth."[26] Caj Källmann named "Anthem" as one the albums
best songs[21] and Chad Bowar from About described it as "appropriately
enough, anthemic"[20] Jay Brown from Ultimate Guitar named "Tragedy and
Triumph" his favorite track on the album,[23] while Ollila called the track "one
of the biggest rally's of Iced Earth's career", and that it makes "an over aged
fan boy do a one man circle pit across his living room."[19]
Many have also praised Stu Block's performance as the new lead vocalist.
Jay Brown felt that Stu Block "makes himself at home as Iced Earth's new
singer on Dystopia."[23] Caj Källmalmm called his vocals "very much like Matt
Barlow['s], but much better."[21] Mark Gromen from Brave Words & Bloody
Knuckles said that Block shows off "his ability to tread the lines of both Tim
"Ripper" Owens and Matt Barlow, yet make the song his own"[22]and Chad
Bowar said that Block "brings a varied performance, and delivers the lyrics
convincingly no matter if it's an aggressive lower pitched section, traditional
singing or belting it out."
On the other hand, some have criticized the album. Juha Attola criticized the
album for being too much like the bands previous outputs, but still gave
positive feedback of Stu Block's vocals.[26] In the end Attola "was left with a
somewhat subdued image of the album", but recommended it for "fans of
the band, and for anyone who likes traditional heavy metal." Baz Anderson
from "Metal Storm" also recommended the album as "a confidence-boosting
album that will be much appreciated and gladly received by anyone with an
interest in this long-running and respectable band," but also said that the
album "doesn't go beyond being just good"[25]
