The paragraphs below describe different situations of an English lesson.

At the places numbered, try to think what the teacher could say in the situation.

It’s Monday morning. Your first lesson is about to begin. You are in the corridor outside your
classroom. Simon arrives. You greet him (1). He is carrying his school bag and a tennis racket. You don’t want
the tennis racket in the classroom (2). Two of your students are still in the corridor (3).

You go into the classroom. A moment later a student appears. You tell him to come in (4). He leaves the door
open (5). You greet the whole class. You hope everybody is well after the weekend (6). Then, you ask a
student how he is (7). You introduce yourself (8).

The students are talking and you want to take the register (9). One of the students tells you that Anna is
absent. You wonder if any of the others have seen her (10). Mary, who has been away for two weeks, is back
in the class. You welcome her (11) and ask her where she has been (12).

You want to start the lesson, but first you have to get their attention (13). Maya’s desk is open (14), and Joe is
busy reading his chemistry textbook (15). At that moment the door opens and Tom comes in. He’s twenty
minutes late. You ask for some explanation (16). Tom explains that he forgot to get off the bus. You just want
to get on with the lesson (17) but you make it clear that he mustn’t be late again (18).
