4.2.2.8 Concrete permeability

A low permeability concrete is required to achieve the 120 years durability against carbonation and chiefly
chloride induced corrosion.
This permeability may be assessed in the laboratory through the chloride diffusion coefficient D and on site
during production through the electric resistivity p. Calibration during mix design tests and field trial mix tests
is needed.
Design 0 and p values and other relevant parameters will have to be fixed according to the chosen Service
Life Design method and associated test protocols:
FIB Model Code for Service Life Design / DuraCrete / DARTS method;
Life-365TM method;
LCPC method (Maitrise de la durabilite des ouvrages d'art en beton):
Other methods.
Applicable testing standards and indicative target values at 90 days are:
Rapid Chloride Migration test (RCM, NT Build 443) - Indicative target value at 90 days:
DRCM< 2-3.10-12 m2/s;
XP CENITS 12390-11 Testing hardened concrete Part 11: Determination of the chloride resistance
of concrete, unidirectional diffusion - Indicative target value at 90 days: Dnss< 2-3.10-12 m2/s;
Two Electrode Method (TEM test) - Indicative target value at 90 days: TEM '" 300 n.m;
ASTM C 1202 Standard Test Method for Electrical Indication of Concrete's Ability to Resist Chloride
Ion Penetration - Indicative target value at 90 days: < 500-1000 Coulombs;
XP P 18-463 Essai de perrneabilite aux gaz sur beton durci - Indicative target value at 90 days:
Kgaz < 1.5 10-16 m2.

4.2.2.9 Concrete surface treatments

Hydrophobic surface treatments of the segments are required on the outer side of the segments
for the entrance sections of the tunnel where the lining is not fully submerged (to be confirmed by
additional water analysis).
Coating is required on the inner side of the segments to improve durability against carbonatin
induced corrosion;
Concrete surface treatments shall be of the water repellent type (silanes) as an additional protective measure
against penetration of aggressive substances (including water in this case). The products shall be selected,
tested and applied on site according to EN 1504 Part 1, 2, 9 and 10.
Products sheets, references, tests results shall be provided by the Contractor for the approval of the
Checker.
The surface treatment coating shall be compatible with the glue for the gaskets (see § 5.11). The properties
of the glue shall not be affected in any way by the coating. The quality of the gasket fixing shall not be

] reduced or impaired. This has to be proved by onsite tests on fabricated segments, according to the product
and data sheets of the producers for glue and coating. Coating shall not be applied on the lateral faces of
the segments, especially not on the gasket groove. Staining of the gasket groove with coating product shall
be prevented with adequate means during application of the coating.

4.2.2.10 Cement and other cementitious materials

The optimum choice and combination of cement and other cementitious materials (silica fume, fly ash, slag)
to achieve the above mentioned requirements should be in accordance with the entire construction process
under responsibility of the Constructor.
